2018.12.29 00:10 Rsubs33 [Game Preview] Week 17 - Philadelphia Eagles(8-7) at Washington Redskins (7-8)

Philadelphia Eagles (8-7) at Washington Redskins (7-8)
It looks as if the ghost of Super Bowl MVP past has returned once more to try to save the Eagles season. Foles looked comfortable out there throwing 35-49 for 471 yards and 4 TDs as the Eagles kept their playoff hopes alive against the playoff bound Houston Texans. The Eagles will need to take care of business as they take on the division rival Redskins who have been hobbled since losing Alex Smith for the season in week 12. The Redskins might be beat up, but they still have a lot of talent especially on the defensive side of the ball. Foles will need to keep the Eagles offense rolling and spread ball around to keep the Redskins defense off balance. If the Eagles offense can put up the points the Eagles defense should be able to shut down the Redskins on offense where they have suffered a majority of their injuries and will be starting journeyman QB Josh Johnson on Sunday. The Eagles will need some help though if they want to make it into the playoffs to defend their title. That help needs to come from the Chicago Bears who are taking on the Minnesota Vikings. If the Bears win and the Eagles take care of their own business, the Eagles will sneak in as a 6th seed. Let’s hope BDN has some magic left in that old slong of his. Go Birds!

Eagles 28 - Redskins 13
Eagles took on the division rival Redskins who may be one of the only teams with more key injuries than the Eagles and it just got worse for Washington with backup Colt McCoy having to leave the game with a broken fibula after the first quarter. Journeyman and former Eagles Mark Sanchez was forced into action just two weeks after joining the team. With the limited off the Redskins struggled to get anything going on offense outside of a long 90 yards AP TD run in the 2nd quarter. On the other side of the ball the Redskins offense struggled to stop the Eagles who seemed to move the ball with ease. The Eagles offense looked in rhythm for the first time this season moving the ball both through the air and on the ground and getting multiple people involved. Carson Wentz threw for 306 yards 2 TDs and an INT and the Eagles moved the ball on the ground with 134 yards on 29 carries from their running backs in a 28-13 win.

Eagles 30 - Redskins 17
Carson Wentz was 26-29 for 307 yards and two touchdowns as the second-year quarterback guided the Philadelphia Eagles to a 30-17 victory over the Washington Redskins on Sunday in a sloppy, mistake-filled season opener between the NFC East rivals. Wentz frustrated the Redskins defenders all day with his ability to avoid sacks and extend plays including a 56 TD pass to Nelson Agholor to put the Eagles on the board first. The Eagles struggled to run the ball throughout the game averaging just 2.4 yards per carry. However, they were able to pull out a win with Wentz carrying the offense and an impressive performance by the defense where they caused 3 turnovers (2 FF, 1 INT) and 4 sacks. It wasn't pretty, but it was a hard fought division game that saw the Eagles come out on top.

Recap from Last Week’s Games.
Eagles - Video – The Eagles looked to keep their season alive and Super Bowl MVP came out to play as Foles threw for a franchise record 471 yards and 4 TDs on 35-49 passing hitting 10 receivers in the process. The Eagles lost the lead late and on the final drive Nick Foles ran back onto the field after a hard shot knocked him out for a play and the crowd roared, seemingly knowing he was about to do it again. Foles did do it again as he got the Eagles into field goal range. Jake Elliott kicked a 35-yard field goal as time expired and the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Houston Texans 32-30 Sunday to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Washington - Video – The Redskins were eliminated from playoff contention last week as they couldn’t hold off Blaine Gabbert who came off the bench for the third time this season, Gabbert threw for 101 yards after the Redskins knocked Mariota out of the game late in the first half with a stinger. Gabbert hit Taywan Taylor for 35 yards to jump-start the winning drive, Derrick Henry ran four times for 33 yards, his last an 18-yarder to the 2. Gabbert then hit Pruitt at the back of the end zone. PFF Stat to Know
Josh Norman’s Decline
Venture a guess as to how many Eagles DBs with notable snaps have allowed a lower passer rating than Josh Norman, in 2018. Got that number in mind? Add a few. The number is SEVEN. Cre’Von LeBlanc has allowed a lower passer rating than Norman. Ok, now, considering the title of this section, guess what that number was in 2017. Think hard. That number is....also SEVEN. The difference? In 2018, the Landoverians only fielded 2 DBs with lower passer ratings allowed than Norman (both Safeties, Swearinger now gone). In 2017? The Landover team had SIX DBs that posted better passer ratings (3 CBs). You have to go back to the 2016 season and earlier to find dominant Norman. At that point, only one DB posted a better passer rating (the Eagles’ McLeod).
Matchups to Watch
Eagles Offensive Line vs. Redskins Defensive Line
Just like in the previous match up, this battle will go a long way to helping the Eagles win in the air and on the ground. This is especially true with the less mobile Foles. The Eagles offensive line has been among the leagues very best the last 3-4 weeks but has been good all year. The recent performance has been more about this group rounding into last years form. The Redskins defensive front is still very talented and has given the Eagles plenty of fits over the years even if their first meeting was a clear win for the Eagles. Ryan Kerrigan and Preston Smith are a very good edge pairing; if Peters is unable to go or finish out this contest, Smith will have a very nice match up against the struggling Big V. John Allen and Da'ron Payne are two young but very talented IDL for the Skins and match up well against Seumalo and Wisniewski. Wis has done a solid job for the Eagles in Seumalo's absence but it would be nice to get the latter back into the lineup. Contrary to potential popular opinion, Seumalo does appear to be the better option at LG as the team moves forward. He offers more versatility in the run game and has been steadily improving as a pass blocker as well. One aspect of the OL improvements of late has been the offensive philosophy to speed up the time to throw. This hasn't been a new development for the Eagles since this started against the Cowboys in Dallas, but it has also helped alleviate the pressure the OL was facing. The Redskins run defense has had it's issues of late but the run game for the Eagles isn't anything to write home about. "Lead back" Josh Adams has a sizzling sub 2.0 yards per carry on 26 carries the last 2 weeks as he is showing he's the more limited back he really is. The Eagles should look to lean on the quick passing game as an extension of the run game like last week especially given the suspect coverage guys for the Redskins and the fact the Darren Sproles is in fact still useful. It all starts up front for both teams as controlling the line of scrimmage generally leads to positive results.
Eagles Defensive Line vs. Redskins Offensive Line
This was the definitive match up for the Eagles in their first meeting as the secondary was still struggling to find its footing. As they should have, the DL dominated the decimated Redskins OL that is still decimated. Long, Cox, Bennett, Graham, and Jernigan should all have a good day at the office with this struggling unit. Unfortunately for the Skins, they are also down to their 4th (or 5th?) option at QB this season in Josh Johnson. It's admirable that Johnson has been able to function at all in that offense which is a testament to his competitive nature. One thing he does offer that can help him in this matchup is added mobility. Regardless, the Skins offensive line is one more injury away from throwing a toaster into block and they have a bad passer to account for with even more lackluster weapons. There is no excuse for the Eagles defensive line to get after Johnson in this contest and control Adrian Peterson. It'll require consistent and disciplined play from the defense to keep the Redskins offense from being effective.
Eagles Secondary vs Competence
The Redskins offense is a hot pile of garbage and injury is a major reason why. Even when healthy the receiving options were rather limited for Alex Smith. Since week 1, the Redskins have been struggling mightily to do anything outside of leaning on Adrian Peterson. The Eagles secondary is still a much banged up unit but has been playing much better football of late - especially since Maddox returned. The last couple of weeks have seen steady improvement from Rasul Douglas, elevated play from rookie Avonte Maddox, and a surprising contribution from Leblanc. Malcolm Jenkins is still excellent and Corey Graham hasn't cost the Eagles a game recently so things are looking better. This is still a shaky secondary but it's been better coached and playing better of late. Their opponent is among the league worst this season passing efficiency and there should be no reason for that to change this week. It's the Eagles vs the Redskins so anything can happen, but a performance worse than their first match up would be disheartening for the Eagles and threaten their playoff hopes.
Eagles Pass Offense vs Redskins Pass Defense
Since week 14 the Eagles have been using 12 personnel more often than they did earlier this season and the results don't surprise: they are better offensively. For some reason, the coaching staff was hesitant in getting the team to operate in that grouping for much of the year until the season was on the brink. The Eagles have scored 30 points in each of the last two games thanks in large part to better coaching. The defense has also turned the ball over and given the Eagles more drives which helps the offense score more points. This match up presents another opportunity for 12 personnel to flourish given the recent release of DJ Swearinger. Zach Ertz already owns the Skins and will have an opportunity to feast even more. Golden Tate had his best performance as an Eagles in this first match up between these two teams and could be in line for some opportunities again. The Skins passing defense has been good of late and will present challenges for the outside receivers. The Eagles can't allow themselves to be put in less than favorable down and distance situations. Their LBs and safeties can be exposed in coverage so look for the Eagles to attack the middle of the defense through the air.

Since the Reds have had to be taking that chance all year long, I thought I'd have a look before September happened and see how Reds starters in their debut year compared to those in the league as a whole.
Baseball Reference keeps a list of players making their major league debut and their stats for the year - the pitchers, ordered by games started, are here:
The appended table is based on those numbers as of August 31, with some calculations mixed in for your enjoyment. Reading through the numbers, here are some things that stuck out for me.

The Reds had a ton of guys start a ton of games in their debut year in 2017.

The Reds got starts from seven different pitchers who made their MLB debut in 2017. The Mariners and the Twins tied for second in MLB in this category (through August 31) with four debuting starters apiece this year. I believe that by mid-April, when it was clear the Reds would need a lot of starter innings to come from somebody, Dick Williams and Bryan Price began saying they'd look at everybody this year. They certainly have!
The Reds are third in the majors in number of starts by pitchers in their debut year with 44. The Mariners have gotten 46 starts from their four debuting pitchers, and the Rockies have to be ecstatic about the 52 starts they've gotten from Freeland and Senzatela - but the Reds certainly put an above-average load this year on starters who hadn't seen the majors before.

The 2017 Reds debut starters, collectively, did exactly what you'd expect.

The Wins Above Replacement metric is designed to show the number of wins a player's results would be expected to earn, compared to the average guy you'd just call up from AAA because somebody's arm fell off and it's an emergency.
The total WAR earned by the Reds seven debuting starters through August 31? Zero... point... zero. It's actually a little odd that worked out so precisely like everyone should have expected, but certainly we couldn't have expected anything else.

The Reds let their pitchers debut at a younger than average age in 2017, and 2016 as well.

Baseball Reference, maniacs that they are, provide an age at debut to three decimal places in their data. This lets me say (with a reasonably straight face) that the mean average age of this year's 47 debuting starters on the day they entered the major leagues was 24.824.
Here's the list of starters younger than that average that the 2017 Reds sent out to the hill for the anthem:

The Reds have a crop of starters who look to be genuinely ready in 2018.

Having a starting pitcher improve between ages 24 and 25 is better-than-coin-flip odds, at the major league level overall, historically. So think of what 2018 might look like if five out of those nine youngsters named above get 30+ starts with better results than they've had to date... and that's before we talk about letting Homer or Disco see the mound, or a re-signed Feldman, or any of the other four "older" guys who got the ball this year.
All in all, I got happier for next year the more I looked at these numbers. It seems quite possible that the Louisville starting rotation in 2018 will be more solid than the Cincinnati starting rotation in 2017, and if we just hold our cards (*cough* Hunter Greene *cough*) 2019 will be better yet.

(For the benefit of that one guy who showed up last time I did this sort of thing: yes, I did some long division and formatted a markdown table for this post. This does not mean I feel like I just reinvented sabermetrics, or that I said anything by including the table that the English text above the table didn't say. Source of the numbers is Baseball Reference, as linked above.)
