2020.09.17 09:12 gadgetmcfly How Hentai helped me become an Ex Simp

Warning: loooong text, a few months old repost because I thought some of you all might need it and some poster in reddit said he had nothing better to do. So it all goes back to almost high school me. Horny dumbass experiencing love for the first time. It was for this cute weeb girl one class above me, she was older than me. Something that gave me a slight edge over the competition is my skill to draw well which came in handy lots of times, but as everything I have, it’s a double edged sword. I met her when I was pretty dumb and young, she was pretty, I didn’t know her name, but she looked like a good person. I really liked music so I asked permission for the music teacher to practice in the music room and lo and behold, after sometime of playing she joined in. I played the hardest songs I had learned by ear, cause i can’t read well music notes, like the super mario land 2 theme, snow land from mario kart super circuit and starlight zone. I learned some interesting stuff there. Somehow I ended up knowing there that she’s dating the midget of the class, he’s my eight year old brother’s size and he was eleven at the time but he is quite charming and fun, that’s why this conversation was me at my rather unpressive peak. When the waffles episode of teen titans go aired, everyone was saying waffles like in that episode and she hated it and I wholeheartedly agree. She liked love live and fox girls. Pretty fun conversation in my opinion. I tried to get to know her better and worked to relative success until... My brother joined the religion workshop and unlike everyone who did it to do their obligatory workshop and do nothing there, he did it because he’s a mildly good boy. There he met the girl I liked. I told him I liked her before, trusting him he wouldn’t tell anyone, but as any secret I tell him, it get’s out and I get fucked over big time and everyone laughs and I try not to cry like a bitch, but that wasn’t the case. This had greater repercussions. Fast forward to the next day, lunch. I was sitting next to my brother and she was close and then she asked me. -Hey, are you my friend or the one that likes me? “Fuck you brother, I have no options left, I wish you never said that, I wish I could trust you with secrets, but I was too stupid to keep to myself” -I’m... the one that likes you... -ok. that was the last lines we verbally shot at each other for like a year. He said he was doing it to help me and laughed it off and kept making fun of me for it. He didn’t know shit about what was going inside my mind by then. I... I still don’t know how to describe what I felt. I was simping hard for her, but my love poisoned mind didn’t listen. So a year went by. I didn’t care much about romance anymore, I was playing with the boys now, just fun times, didn’t care about grades, I had daily fun, got my switch next year, everything was fine. I don’t remember what happened but somehow I think we talked to eachother again, I think it was that one time I published a comic to the school’s newspaper and people loved it, and I thought to myself “This time i can and will succeed”. Apparently, I was too stupid to abide by my word. I was younger than her, had bad social intelligence and she had seen me cry about everytime I did, like 5 times, and to add insult to injury, she knew that every time I tried to talk to her, it was eventually to date her. It’s like the stars aligned to fuck me over. At least I made some good plays along the way. Like all those four times she watched me drawing in admiration. Along the year I told two girls from her class that I liked her and they said they wanted to help and I said I didn’t want help. We went for a road trip and I fucked up in multiple ways. There was this crowd around a bee in the floor and I stepped on it, I still don’t know why, but I think it was a just action. Why so? Well, you can call me murderer and all, you aren’t wrong after all but where I live, bees were brought in by colonizers. They affected the ecosystem of native pollinizers so it was kinda justified but wrong anyways. Everyone called me a murderer and then ran off and cried. Then in the walking part about the trip, those two girls told me my crush broke up with the midget. I somehow then was driven to the edge again and cried some more. There where these paper thingies covering our windows so we couldn’t get distracted by the other classes’ recess so y tore apart a hole in the corner to watch my crush through the window. I was caught eventually and I thought it was over for me but the teacher, an absolute sis covered my dumass telling the students that it’s ok because I’m experiencing love for the first time and im quite young. Thank you teach, I’ll be forever grateful for your help. Then in Valentine’s Day, some students were selling chocolates with a letter to someone. I wrote a letter full of lovely nothings from anonymity, I should have written an apology for my infinite stupidity but the chance escaped my hand. After buying the chocolate, I was broke and then when chocolates for my class were delivered, I had nothing. Some girls and boys got multiples but I was empty handed like I expected. Somehow it flew over my head, the chance that I won’t get the girl but I was too dumb to understand. Then she joined theater class with a friend so I joined in too. I was timid at the start but eventually became friendlier to everyone. They knew me as a creative genuis with good skills at convincing people to join the workshop and good drawing skills. I might have accidentally flexed on her and unintentionally said that she is worse at drawing than me but I wasn’t very educated on subtext and fucking choosing my words carefully. That same class she said she was switching schools after year’s end so I had one chance. Dumass me tried to not think it was my fault because I probably was even tho I wasn’t a stalker or a creep, I was just a young lovefool and never did anything too immoral. At the end of one class she said something to me I want to forget but I probably won’t ever forget it. -Hey, does your brother like me? -No, I love you but he doesn’t. -Ok, see you. -Goodbye. I came out of that conversation with a corroted success in my mind, with a corrosion expanding like a pandemix until I realized. “I said the L word too soon, now I’m getting the L for it”. Last day of theater workshop and the teacher tells me and my crush to try to get new kids interested. We shared no words during the day but I was still joyful, not for her presence but for all the children i’m getting hyped up for the workshop next year, I was happy giving to people, I was very happy and I walked out of there with a wide smile on my face. But we are back in reality now, school was about to end so I asked everyone trustworthy for advice under the sun what should I do and they said I should ask her out. While that happened a classmate told me she asked him where I was to talk to us. I had just the necessary bit of hope now. I asked her three questions in three days, gradually escalating from innocent to the last question, Did you ask [Insert Classmate Name Here] where I were so you could talk to me? She Said No. I was played like a damn fiddle, everyone told me to ask her out that day but I just couldn’t due to my lack of courage. I had only the last day to ask her out. Allright dear readers, if you want to ask a girl out, don’t do it when your odds are bleeding, do it when the relationship is escalating and your odds are getting better. The bell rang of the last day and zoomed acroos the school to find her and I told her I had something to tell her... -I can’t I’m way behind in my schedule and I’m busy. It was over for me, I was crushed, I wasn’t even funny anymore, just sad, but I couldn’t cry, I deep inside knew this would happen, love left my body, I thought clearly and I didn’t cry, I had cried enough. Pretty much all of my family helped me overcome this, even my mom when she repeatedly shipped us. But well, a win over her is a win, maybe not because I wanted to win but it’s there. I faked being okay and having gotten over it but the pain remained but not with the same label. Whiel this was happening, I discovered a hentai where the girl getting screwed was pretty much the same as my crush, it was pretty vanilla and the final sex scene was hella sad but my dick didn’t care. I stopped coming back to it after a while. I became more fucked up as time went, I masterbated almost daily, I couldn’t look myself in the mirror, with strangers I always adopted a facade of the calm, serious and emotionless kid which hurt my social skills and chances of getting in another school and starting over. Eventually I got in after some emotional coaching with my mom and had my first day, I showed who I truly was that day and everyone fucking admired me. Mostly because I didn’t cry because I didn’t repress my emotions anymore, I let them move. This helped me so I can now see myself in the mirror without cringing hard. The problems were still there but they were better. Fast forward to today, typical night of searching for hentai. I was searching for this obscure 90’s hentai I found some months ago and then I found it while inptuting the words. That hentai I used to cope with my misery. I decided to give it a watch. Getting off to it was fucking impossible for the previously mentioned shit, the scene in the hentai itself was a sort of goobye moment so it was sad. I couldn’t think about the hentai as my mind was busy with my self loathing and regrets. Then I said to myself that getting off to this was impossible since my dick was hella flaccid but I couldn’t. I felt drawn to it. I did the impossible and did the deed. I was going to pause it and be sad but then the ending came in because I was too lazy to move a hand.
“What’s most important is to love yourself” “We’ll get the chance!” “We get many chances in life” “But our youth comes only once” “Whether it’s Akiba or Harajuku” “All teens are the same” “They dash home an play videogames and read manga” “And send emails to their friends” “But we can’t spend all day crying. What a waste” “What’s most important of all is to love yourself” “We’ll get the chance!” That song resonated with me. Those were the last pieces of my mind puzzle. So may this be a piece of advice on my part as I have learned something far too valuable to keep to myself. Us teenagers shouldn’t worry about love, it’s for grown ups. We teenagers should only worry about our fun and our grades. Have fun, do dumb but funny shit and don’t regret it, there is no point on dwelling in the past, you cannot fix it. Don’t try to be the calm and serious kid, you’re missing out on lots of fun! Loosen up guys, be yourselves and party hard! Now that we are in cuarantine, play online games with your friends! Let your teen spirit shine but most importantly, love yourselves. Everyone is seeking validation today, they are throwing people under the bus for it. You are the only one that can give value to yourself, don’t depend on people to validate you, don’t base your worth on how much he/she likes you, base it on how much you like yourself. I’ve come a long way to learn this, so im passing on this knowledge to you, so you can use your life the best you can. TLDR: Hentai taught me to never look back in regret because I can’t change the past, to live my teenage life at it’s fullest and not have draining romantic relationships and to love oneself as you can only give yourself value and learn to let go of a relationship that won’t work.

2020.09.17 05:18 Diogenes_Camus RTX RWBY Panel Summary Notes

Well, I watched the RTX at Home RWBY Panel earlier this morning and I wrote a summary of notes that I wanted to share with everyone.
  • So it took a whole to get to the meat and potatoes of the RWBY panel. The first 20-25 minutes was the CRWBY members shilling out a lot of merchandise. Also, the RWBY: The Grimm Campaign series has stuff that's canon to the world of RWBY. So if there's any diehard DxD fans here who are interested, by all means, do us a solid and try to make notes for us.
  • Anyways, on to some new info. Volumes 7, 8, and 9 were greenlit together. According to Eddy Rivas, Volume 9 is about a few weeks from being completed.
  • RWBY Volume 8 is coming out on November 7th, with a big asterisk attached because of the COVID-19 pandemic forcing CRWBY to work remotely, so there may be delays. But this can tangentially be considered the premiere date for Volume 8.
  • Volume 8 is going to have 14 episodes. They've been excited for this one for years.
  • JNPR Anthology Manga coming out (give me time and I'll edit this to give the exact date of release)
  • A new RWBY video game is coming out, in partnership with Arc System Works and Wayforward, with Wayforward being in charge of production while Arc System Works is in charge of distribution. You may know Wayforward with their game River City Girls which they made in partnership with Arc System Works.
Now, to get to the questions that were asked in video form.
.
We know Ruby's birthday is October 31st. What are other character's birthdays?
Answer: Neptune- May 1 (same as Kerry's)
Weiss- May 15 (Taurus)
Blake- January 19 (Capricorn)
Yang- July 28 (Leo)
They based the birthdays on astrological horoscope stuff. Sadly, the main girls were the only ones who's birthdays were revealed. There was some joking about Jaune's birthday being February 29 or April 1, along with Sun. But that was just joking.
.
Will Team RWBY be visually retconned to having a more appropriate, definitive musculature?
Answer: The person was basically asking if it's going to be possible to see the main characters have a sort of visual retcon with a more definitive musclature to them, as fitting with their Huntress profession. And I'm like yeah, give us dem #RenAbs back.
CRWBY said that it may or may not happen with the next RWBY clothing change in the future. They don't want to create a drastic change in how their characters look. They mentioned about how when they were starting out, they tended to use one regular body model and didn't have the time or budget to be specific with the body types of the character models. CRWBY mentioned that it's possible with the new characters that get revealed.
They also revealed that Ace Ops were planned to being physically diverse, which is why Harriet Bree has runner's legs and Elm Ederne has a tall and bulky and thicc figure.
.
What would you do if you met your characters in real life?
Boring. That's a question that's been asked thousands of times before. I'm not even going to bother writing down or even remembering whatever CRWBY said in response to this question. Moving on.
.
In an universe where the Grimm can only be defeated with music, and Hunters are musicians, what songs would they play?
Answer: "Thunderstruck" by AC/DC and "Immigrant Song" by Led Zeppelin.
At least that's a very creative question to ask.
.
Does Ironwood and Watts have Semblances?
Answer: Watts has no Semblance. He knows basic self-defense and he's relied more on his wits and his manipulation of technology. He thinks that developing one was a waste of time when compared to what he could do with tech and stuff.
.
For James, he has a Semblance called "Mettle". It's a passive one that basically gives him a stubborn, hyperfocused, disciplined, Iron Will mindset, which I guess is similar to Ren's Tranquility.
DC Rant Time
.
Now hol' up. I got some fucking choice words here because I think that explanation is pretty dumb and doesn't make sense. "Watts refuses to unlock his Semblance because he doesn't care" because that does not fit his character. He's a scientist: of course he'd want his Semblance in case it grants him something like enhanced learning or a better memory.
.
As for Ironwood, his Semblance is kind of lame. Ironwood's is just being a stubborn dickhead and that's not a superpower, that's just being human. Feels like a cop out. I call it stupid because instead of it being one of his character's traits, it's a power. That he wouldn't have an iron will if he didn't have it. So it devalues his character. It's stupid.
.
And Ironwood's Aura was already broken when he got through the pain to get out of Watts' trap, so it shouldn't have worked there. So either way, it is pointless, it does nothing.
.
It's like if Ruby's Semblance was making her optimistic and look at the world as half-full in spite of the darkness in it. Instead of her being like that because that's who she is.
.
It's just stupid and devalues his character. IMO it's best to ignore it and just assume he just never found his.
.
In fact, if you stop to think about it, it kind of sucks that Ironwood has a passive Semblance like that that he can't control, that basically dictates his personality. Semblances are a reflection of the soul and his soul basically forces him to adopt a hyperfocused, stubborn Iron Will mindset and act on it without no choice on his part. He's a slave to his Semblance. If anything, Ironwood could be considered neurodivergent because his mentality is something that he doesn't have any control over.
.
.
Anyways. after that we got the RWBY Volume 8 Teaser. Now this was something that was more in line with the dark and stressed tone of the Volume compared to the WIP Teasers.
Ruby: Atlas is only Salem's current target. She's not hiding any more and once she's done here, she'll move on to the rest of Remnant. We need to warn them!
Ren: There are people here who need us right now.
Ruby or Weiss (couldn't tell from just the audio): But this isn't about just Atlas. It's about all of Remnant.
Ironwood: You're still worried about Mantle?! Salem will destroy Atlas and with it, any hope that humanity has left.
...
Salem: I have questions for you. But first I need the one to show me how.
That's it.

Chapters 4 through 7...
Chapter Four: Keeping Kishi Busy

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I watch as Monika heads off towards her home. Just as I am wondering what to do next, my phone buzzes.

Yuri: I hope I’m not bothering you.

“Nah…you’re fine. What’s up?”

Yuri: I thought maybe we could get together, if that’s all right.

“Well, I’m in town right now and was thinking about lunch. Would you like to join me? We can meet at one of the tea houses.”

Yuri: That sounds nice. Let me look to find one close to you and I will text you back.

“Sounds like a plan. See you soon.”

It doesn’t take too long to get to the place that she picked out. It’s small and not very busy at the moment. I hang around outside until Yuri shows up.

“Hi Kishi! Have you been waiting long?”

“No, not at all. Besides, it’s a beautiful day today so I was just soaking up some of the sunshine.”

“Ready to go inside?”

“After you m’lady!” I say with a bow. I extend my left arm towards the door as I hold it open with my right.

“Such a gentleman!”

“Well, sometimes, I guess!”

We both place our orders and find a small table near the windows at the front of the store.

“So how was your first week of school, Yuri?”

“It was okay, I am glad to be back although the break was very refreshing. How was your week?”

“Just okay. I’m not thrilled with having math first thing in the day but I suppose it might be better to get it out of the way. And, as long as I got enough sleep, I should be alert.”

“Ah, that’s a good way to look at it, I suppose. Speaking of math, you mentioned studying together this week possibly?”

“Yes, I did, although I also said that I wasn’t sure if I would be able to help much. Math is not my strongest subject.”

“Well, maybe between the two of us, we can figure things out. Is there a time that works best for you?”

I think for a minute. “How about Wednesday after the club meeting? We could walk to my house.”

“Oh…”

“Something wrong?”

“Don’t you usually walk home with Sayori?”

“Why would that be a problem? We’re all friends, so I don’t see anything wrong with us walking home together. It’s not like we are dating or anything.”

“Well, if you’re sure that it won’t cause trouble.”

“Yuri, you’re over thinking again. Trust me, it will be fine.”

We finish our teas and prepare to head out.

“Kishi, thanks for meeting with me. I appreciate you taking time out of your day for me. You are a wonderful friend to me!”

Ack! Will I ever be comfortable accepting a compliment from a girl? I feel my face become flushed.

“It’s nothing Yuri…it’s just what friends do for each other.”

She smiles and waves goodbye.

I head off to the grocery and do my shopping. Then, I turn for home.

Another buzz.

Natsuki: Hey! Whatcha doin’?

“Just heading for home. What’s up?”

Natsuki: Can I come over? It’s kind of important.

“Sure. I should be back there in 15 to 20 minutes.”

Natsuki: Okay, see you soon

I barely get through the door and get my shoes off when there’s a knock on the door. I open it and find that Nat is already here. I invite her in and close the door behind her.

“I’ll have to apologize for the place being a mess. I’ve unexpectedly been away all day and haven’t had a chance to do any cleaning.”

“This is different from any other day how?” she says with an ornery smile.

“Ouch! Not even here 5 minutes and already starting in on me?”

“You love it!” she laughs.

“I guess I would think something was wrong if you didn’t though, so it’s all good. However, you did say that it was important. So what’s going on?” I ask as we sit on the couch.

“Just a rough day I guess. I needed to get out of the house for a bit.”

Those words send emotions whirling through my body. I feel my hands clench and I took a second look at her face.

“No, no…nothing like that.” she quickly says, noticing my reaction. “We just had a disagreement and things started to get a little heated.”

“You still can’t help yourself, can you?” I say.

“I’m just an emotional girl and I guess I’m best at being angry.” she says wistfully.

“That’s really not the emotion to be best at. We both know what has happened in the past.”

“Yeah but things are different now. He’s working and we are better off financially.”

“Then what was the disagreement about?” I inquire.

“He doesn’t think I’m taking my studies seriously enough. Also, he overheard me talking about manga. He flipped out! That’s why I have to keep it at school. If it were in my room, he would take it all and throw it out. He just doesn’t understand…”

A tear starts to form in her eye. I place a hand on her shoulder and she gives a weak smile.

“That’s why I wanted to come over. I know that you understand what it means to me. Plus, I think my dad is afraid of you.”

“What?! Why would you say that? I’ve never done anything to him!”

“No, you haven’t. But, remember that time last year when we were out shopping for the gift exchange? He started to get on my case and you told him that I wasn’t doing anything wrong. I think he saw some fire in your eyes that day. Plus, look how you reacted today when you thought that something bad had happened.”

“Well, there is no way I am going to stand by and let anything like that happen to you again. It’s just not right. I still don’t understand why you didn’t go to the police.”

“It’s all working out. We just had a little setback today. I’m taking a little time to cool off.”

“But that argument isn’t going away if he doesn’t think that you’ve changed. And obviously, you’re not going to change.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Am I wrong?”

“Well…no, I guess not.”

Her eyes are fixed on the floor.

“So what can I do?” she asks.

“In my opinion, you both need to go work with a counselor, like you did before when he…”

I stop myself.

“I think don’t think that you will be able to work this out between the two of you. Your positions are too far apart and neither of you is likely to compromise without some outside help.”

“I don’t suppose I could just have you talk to him, could I?” she says half questioningly.

“I’m not qualified to work as a counselor. Besides, I would not be able to stay neutral.”

“I know! That’s why I want you to do it. You’re on my side!”

We both start laughing.

“That’s not quite how the process is supposed to work Nat. My suggestion is to go home and ask him if he would be willing to go to a family counselor.”

“I suppose that would be best.” she sighs.

I walk her to the door.

“Thanks for letting me come over. I knew that I could count on you. You have a way of calming me down and helping me to see things more clearly. I’m so glad that you’re my friend!”

And with that she gives me a quick hug and heads out the door. I hope that they get the help that they need.

Wow! Is it really time for dinner already? Where did the day go? And to think it started with nothing to do!

I start to ponder what to make, but hear a knock on the door. Did Natsuki forget something?

I open the door and find Sayori standing there.

“Hey, I stopped over earlier but you were gone. Then I saw the lights on and thought I’d take a chance and see if you wanted to hang out for a while.”

I laugh as I recount the events of my day to her. A sad look comes over her face.

“Well, you probably want to be left alone then. I’ll just head home.”

“Sayori! Don’t be silly. You know that I love spending time with you! Besides, I was just about to fix some food. You wouldn’t want to miss out on my cooking, would you?”

“Are you sure? I feel like I’m being a burden right now.”

“Sayori, please stop. I hate when you talk like that. You are never a burden to me. We’re best friends, right? That means we are here for each other.”

She mulls it over for a minute. “Well, maybe it would be okay to stay for a little while. But you better tell me when you get tired!”

“Deal! Now, what are you in the mood for?”

“Something quick and easy. Got any chocolate?”

“Oh, if my mother heard you say that! Of course, she would probably blame me!”

We both laugh.

After we eat, we relax on the couch, playing some video games. Eventually, I stand and stretch.

“I suppose I better head home. I’ve bothered you long enough.”

“How many times must I tell you that you’re not a bother. I enjoy being around you. You help me relax. However, I do have to do some cleaning and I haven’t even started on my poem or my homework.”

I feel like I’m shooing her away, but there’s only so many hours in the day. As we reach the door, I feel the need to give her a reassuring hug.

“Thanks for being my friend. And thanks for saving me from being a NEET!”

“Yeah,” she replies with sadness in her voice, “I guess I don’t have to worry about that anymore, do I?”

I’m left wondering if there was a hidden message in that statement as she walks towards her house.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chapter Five: Natsuki Gets Help?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday morning breaks and I get busy. I go into the kitchen and get breakfast ready. I tried a new recipe this morning for scrambled eggs. I hope they taste as good as they look. Father comes in and takes his seat at the table. I slide some eggs onto a plate alongside some toast and sausage and place it in front of him. I also get him a cup of hot coffee. He doesn’t smile, but does offer his thanks. We are mostly silent as we eat. I finally decide to bring up the subject of counseling again, but not with much hope.

“Father, can we go back to counseling please?”

“Why? There is nothing wrong in this house as long as you are obedient.”

“But you never listen to me! I would just like someone impartial to try to help us come to an agreement. I don’t want to keep arguing about the same things over and over.”

I start to get tears in my eyes. He looks over at me. Wait! Was there some sadness in that look?

“I will go back if you will promise to abide by their decision. Then, that will be the end of it and I won‘t have to deal with it anymore. I have no doubt that they will find that I am right in what I ask of you.”

Well, at least there is some hope there. Now its on to the next subject.

“Father?”

“What now? I thought that we were done with that conversation!” he says gruffly.

“It’s something else. I’ve noticed that you have been hanging more pictures of mother over the mantle. Are you okay?”

“I have been spending time looking through our photo albums. I see so many pictures of the happy times that we had together. I am hanging them up so I don’t forget. I never want to forget your mother!”

I decide not to press the issue anymore. I can’t help but wonder if his actions are healthy. It seems like the constant reminder would just make the sadness grow. At least, that is how it’s working on me. I have to avert my eyes when I walk through there.

After completing my homework and my poem, I decide to let Kishi know.

Thanks for letting me come over. Talked with dad and he agreed to get help for the disagreement that we’re having.

“That’s great Nat! I hope it helps.”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chapter Six: Kishi’s Confusion

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Hi mom! Do you have time to talk?”

“Surprisingly, yes I do! How are you doing? School started last week. How did it go? Is the club meeting again?”

“Mom, you always start with a million questions when we talk!”

“A million?”

“Okay, maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration. School is fine so far, but it’s still early. The club is back together. We have our first poem assignment due tomorrow.”

“And how is that going?”

“Terrible! I just haven’t been able to come up with anything good today. It’s my worst one ever!”

“Wait, did you say you couldn’t come up with anything today?” She put a lot of emphasis on that last word.

“Um…yes, but it’s not as bad as it sounds. I was going to start everything yesterday, but one thing after another came up and , before I knew it, the day was gone.”

I then recount the previous days’ events to her. I include the words that Sayori said to me as she left.

“Am I missing something here? Can she really be upset that I am becoming good friends with the others in the club?”

“Well honey, have you heard the saying ‘Be careful what you wish for’? Maybe it’s what she thought would make you happy, but now she is finding that it makes her unhappy. I’m just guessing here. I would bet that it wouldn’t be an issue if they were all boys instead of girls.”

“Are you saying that she likes me as more than just a friend?”

“I’m saying it is at least a plausible explanation for what she said to you.”

I struggle to maintain focus on mom’s words during the rest of the call. My mind has been opened to a whole new world. She finally notices me being distracted.

“Well honey, it seems that you have some things to think about so I’ll leave you to that. I have some work to finalize for tomorrow, so I’ll say goodnight.”

“Good night mom, and thanks for the talk. I guess I do have some thinking to do.”

“Just make sure you focus on school first young man!’

“Love you mom!” I say as a deflection and end the call.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chapter Seven: Sayori’s Sadness

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The club meetings, other than Mondays, are pretty quiet. Kishi and I spend a lot of time studying. Monika generally sits at the front of the room, studying. Natsuki is reading manga. Yuri is usually lost in a book. I can’t help but look her way sometimes. Once in a while, I catch her looking at Kishi, but she always turns her eyes back to her book very quickly.

I decide to call it a day.

“Heading for home?” Kishi asks.

“Yes, I’ll finish this later. I’m getting hungry.” I reply.

“Okay, I’ll get packed up too. Hey! Yuri is going to walk with us. We set up a study session for tonight. We’re hoping that together we can figure out some of this math stuff.”

I try to hide my disappointment. “Oh, okay.”

“Hey! I know that math is not your best subject either. Would you like to join us?” he asks.

“You ask me now?”, I think to myself. Gee, how thoughtful! I hope that the anger didn’t show on my face.

“Not tonight,” I reply. I then mutter to myself, “Why would I want to be a third wheel?”

I decide to make an excuse. “Oh! I almost forgot! I have to talk to Monika about some club business. You should just go ahead without me. I don’t know how long it will take.”

“You sure?” he asks.

“Positive. I’ll talk to you later.” And with that I gather my things and head towards Monika, trying to think up something to talk to her about. I know! Membership stuff.

As I walk home, I pass Kishi’s house. I wonder if she’s still there. Come on Sayori, don’t start that stuff again. Get your mind on something else. But my mind keeps going back to it as I enter my house. I put my things away and fall back onto my bed. The tug of war in my mind continues. The scales in my head are weighing the good points of each of us. She’s pretty, she’s smart, she’s graceful. The list goes on and on. What am I? A clumsy, scatterbrained, basket case! How can I ever hope… I am cut off by the sound of my phone. It’s a text from Kishi.

“Hey”

Do I really want to deal with anyone right now? I probably should, just to get my mind out of this rut.

Kishi: “You home?”

“Yeah.” I text back, still not sure I want to do this.

Kishi: “Have you eaten yet? I was about to make dinner.”

“I’m not very hungry tonight.”

There is a long pause with “Kishi is typing”.

“If you don’t come over and eat with me, I will bring a plate of food over to your house. If you won’t come to the door, I will start singing and disturb the neighbors until you do come to the door.”

I think for a moment. He probably would do that! That’s part of what I like about him. I better answer him before he does it.

“You’re silly!”

Kishi: “I know, but would you like me as much if I weren’t?”

“Probably not. I guess I’ll be over.”

If you only knew how much I like you. Wait! Did I just say that? Am I starting to like him in that way? I drop that train of thought and head over to his house.

We don’t say much as we begin eating. Then Kishi asks me a question.

“You seem like you’ve had a lot on your mind lately. Are future plans getting you down?”

“I guess you could say that,” I reply, “in a way.”

I pause, but then continue.

“Do you think you’ll ever get married?”

Did I just say that? Why would I say that? What is going on with me?

“Geez, where did that question come from? I have no idea!”

My mouth just keeps going, despite all of the warning signals that my brain has activated.

“Well, if you would, what kind of a girl would you want for a wife?”

“Sayori! I can’t even figure out what I’m going to do after school ends this year! I don’t even want to start thinking about marriage. Besides, I’ve never even had a girlfriend. I probably couldn’t even get one if I tried.”

“You’re so dense sometimes!” I tell him. The words practically flew out of my mouth.

He looks at me with confusion on his face. He could probably have his pick of girls in the club. Even Monika seems to flirt with him occasionally.

“Can we please talk about something else?” he asks. “First you were worried about me being a NEET, now you’re trying to get me married!”

“Well, somebody needs to take care of you.” I say.

“You sound like my mom.” he replies.

We finished eating and clean up the dishes. I thank him for the invitation and the meal. He smiles at me so sweetly.

“It was my pleasure. I like seeing you smile.” he replies.

I slowly head for home, mulling over our conversation. I can’t believe I was asking him those questions. I really need to talk with Dr. Shitori.

2020.09.15 22:10 RedEdSpaghetti DDLC Broken Skies The Novel

I have re-written my original Broken Skies story in a rotating first-person narrative. Each chapter will feature a different original character's viewpoint. I have also added a lot of new content. I will probably post some each day as there are currently around 45 chapters (some are short). It starts out a little slow, but definitely builds towards the end.
Prologue

Ah! Back to school time has arrived. For Kishi, a young man entering his third and final year of high school, it will have a different start than any other year he has had. He started high school as somewhat of a hermit. His parents had divorced, and Kishi withdrew into his room spending his time watching anime and playing video games. This was made easier by the fact that his mother had gotten a promotion at work that required her to leave for long periods of time. He might have become a NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) had it not been for the persistence of his childhood friend Sayori. Her pestering got him to visit her club - the Literature Club - who needed one more member to be recognized by the school. While he almost didn’t join, he found that he couldn’t disappoint the 4 young ladies when they used their sad, puppy-dog eyes on him. But, he soon started to develop friendships with the girls. He has not regretted his decision to join the club.

Actually, Sayori tricked him into visiting the club with the promise of cupcakes. She also played upon his guilt of having drifted away from her by spending so much time in his room. They had been called “inseparable” in their younger years, bonding initially when Kishi bought an ice cream for the little girl who “looked so sad“. The sadness that she had that day was due to a punishment for eating too much candy. Later in life, sadness came in the form of depression, which she managed to hide very well from everyone. When she finally revealed her affliction to Kishi, he urged her to seek help. She was reluctant, having tried it years before when “everyone said it would help” but it didn’t. Eventually she gave in and, with the help of Dr. Shitori and the club members, was able to make great strides in achieving a better life. She still has a problem comparing herself to others, but the club members do their best to keep her thoughts from getting her down. She is the vice-president of the club, having been the first to join after being invited by the founder, Monika.

Monika is one of the most popular kids in their class. She is a standout student as well as a star performer on the tennis team. She is always busy, between practice, studying and running the club and, last year she even started playing the piano! Most people think that she has a perfect life, but Kishi has noticed a couple of times that maybe things aren’t so great.

The third girl in the club is Yuri. She was very shy when the club started but, with a lot of encouragement from Kishi, she began to become a bit more comfortable in social situations. It was a shock to the club members when, one day, her sleeve got caught on a desk and slid up her arm revealing many scars! Although she tried to hide them immediately, she knew that she had to explain. Her self-harm had begun shortly after she lost both of her parents in accident. It became her way of dealing with the pressure when emotions overwhelmed her. But she has done much better as she has grown in closeness to the other club members. They might not understand the cutting, and they might not enjoy the horror novels that she spends so much time reading, but they have accepted her as she is and now she doesn’t feel “weird” around them.

The final member of the club is the cupcake maker, Natsuki. A devotee of manga, a type of comic book by some people’s definition, she probably got her love of cooking and baking from her favorite manga series, The Parfait Girls. She kind of knew that Sayori was up to something when she was asked to bring cupcakes on a “non-special” day. Then, she was a little irritated when the new member turned out to be a boy, but softened a bit when she discovered that he also enjoyed manga. Although most people are put off by her abrasiveness, Kishi just accepts it and seems to enjoy sparring with her in verbal jousting. That abrasiveness comes from the fact that she is a small girl who always feels the need to prove herself. Therefore, anytime she feels that someone is criticizing her or doubting her ability, she takes it personally. This almost led to the club being fractured on a couple of occasions. Although, she and Yuri are like night and day in a lot of aspects, they were able to overcome some of their differences, aided by the fact that Natsuki lost her mother near the beginning of the previous school year. That gave them some common ground. However, her father has had trouble dealing with the loss of his wife and one time ended up giving Natsuki a black eye. Although she tried to hide it, Kishi found out about it. The other members tried to get her to go to the police, but she refused, saying that it was a “one time thing”. So far, that has been true, but things are far from rosy in her house.

And so, the Literature Club is about to reconvene for its second year. There are a lot of questions ahead. Four of the members will have to decide their immediate futures after graduating. Monika and Yuri are certain to go on to university, but Kishi and Sayori have not made any decisions in that regard. Natsuki still has two years to go.
Monika would love to see the club grow this year so Nat can continue it next year. But they will have to try something different than last year. The event that they held during the school festival was a disaster.

Chapter One: Kishi Gets Back in the Groove

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sayori and I started walking to school together last year. As I see her heading my way, a smile comes upon my face. It looks like another good day for her, which always makes me happy. I have gotten to see the worst of the bad days and it is something I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy.

“Hi Kishi”, she says as she skips up to my side.

“Good morning”, I reply “It’s good to see your smiling face on this first day of school!”

“Yeah, I am excited to get back. I have really missed being together with our friends.”

“I agree!”

“What is your homeroom this year?” she asks.

“I have Mr. Date’s (pronounced Da-Te) math class. I can’t say that I am happy about it either. Nothing against him, it’s the math part that I don’t like.” I reply.

“I agree. Math is not a good subject for me either. I guess I am lucky to have history during first period. It’s something that I enjoy studying!”

“Aw! Now you’ve gone and made me jealous. Having history first was so enjoyable last year, although I still managed to fall asleep a couple of times. Fortunately, I didn’t get into too much trouble.”

“Are you still spending too much time playing video games when you should be sleeping?”

“I’ve actually cut back a lot, especially since you got me into the club. You really did save me from becoming a NEET you know.”

“I know, and I’m glad. You’re too nice a person to be holed up in your bedroom by yourself. I am really happy that you decided to stay in the club.”

“I am too. It’s been great getting to know the girls. I can’t complain about the poetry writing either. It was a neat experience last year. Do you think it will be as good this year?”

“I don’t know why not.” she replies. “We survived some bad problems and I think it made our friendships stronger. But, we do have to think about Natsuki and what will happen next year. You should think about some things to increase our membership.”

“Yeah, that’s true. They won’t have a club next year if we don’t get some more kids to join. As long as we don’t have another event like the festival.”

I shudder thinking about it. I can tell that Sayori is also remembering that day. We decided, with Monika’s prodding, to “perform” a poem in front of students who visited our event. It turned out badly when a group of boys were totally disrespectful, talking loudly amongst themselves during the performances, throwing things around the classroom, and even giving a wolf whistle at Yuri. Although Monika did admonish them in between poems, they just ignored her and kept being butt heads. It finally took Natsuki yelling at them to get them to leave. Afterwards, Natsuki and Yuri were upset, saying that it was a bad idea from the start, and that they felt pressured to perform. The conversation got very heated, and some unkind words were spoken. However, we were able to work through it.

“Yeah, we definitely do not want to go through that again.” she says sadly. “Still, we need to do something.”

“You’re right. I’m not much good at that kind of stuff, but I’ll try to think about it.”

We have made it school, and now head to our respective classrooms.

Chapter Two: Monika Resumes the Meetings

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The morning session went by rather quickly. I have made it back to the club room where we eat lunch together. It is an example of how we have grown closer over the past year. We girls are all chatting and getting our food ready to eat. I then see Natsuki wave towards the door. Kishi enters with a smile on his face.

“Why didn’t you use your camera? You could have had a picture to last a lifetime”, Natsuki says in a snarky tone.

“Can’t a guy enjoy seeing his friends having a good time?” Kishi replies.

“You seem a bit more like a stalker to me” she shot back with an ornery smile on her face.

Our lunch breaks always seem to fly by when we are all together, and this one was no exception. We parted ways after I set the date for the first club meeting. “One week from today, which should give us time to get settled into our school year.”

Meeting day has finally arrived. Getting through the day was rough due to the anticipation. Once again, we girls have arrived first and we are waiting on Kishi. He finally enters and I decide to tease him.

“We can get started now that the turtle has arrived!” I say.

“Hey!” he protests, “We got let out a bit late. It wasn’t my fault!”

“Sure!” I reply, laughing. “I don’t have a lot to share, but it’s all important so let’s get to it. First up is the membership. While I love the group that we have become, we should also think about the legacy that we leave behind. We can’t leave Natsuki by herself next year!”

“At least I wouldn’t have to worry about my manga collection getting moved around and put out of order!” she says, half jokingly.

I decide to ignore her comment and proceed.

“I would like for all of us to come up with ideas to advertise our club. Also, think about people in your classes who might be interested but need a little nudge or an invitation. Even if each of us only come up with one person, it would greatly increase our numbers.”

“But that wont’ help Natsuki though. All of our classes are year 3 students, so they wouldn’t be here next year either.” Kishi says.

“Ah! I didn’t think of it like that. Well, I guess just focus on the advertising then.”

They all promise to do that.

“The other thing that I want to discuss is our club activities. Last year, we did the poem writing, which turned out to be a blessing as it allowed us to learn so much about each other and grow closer despite our differences in style. We also did the book talks. What are your thoughts about those things, or maybe someone has a different idea for an activity.”

Sayori speaks up first. “I really, really liked doing the poems. I love everyone’s styles and the way we get to discuss them.”

Everyone else nods in agreement.

Yuri adds, “I thought the book discussions went well. No one seemed left out, even though the book might not have appealed to their taste.”

Kishi is the next to speak.

“While I agree that those were very productive activities, there is another thing that we need to consider. Those of us who are in their last year need to pay more attention to their class work this year. Well, Monika, I don’t think you could possibly do that, and Yuri doesn’t have much to worry about with her grades. But Sayori and I could definitely stand to spend more time studying. Could we just back the schedule off a bit, maybe doing one poem a week? And have the presentations on Mondays? That would give us the weekend time if we need it, and would also give us something to look forward to on Mondays.”

I have to sigh. He is like a wet blanket today! “I suppose you do make a good point. This year will be tougher academically and the pressure is starting to build.”

Yuri speaks up next. “How thoughtless of me to not consider your situations. I’m so sorry for…”

“Yuri!” Kishi says. “You didn’t do anything wrong. It’s just that you are able to learn things easier than we can. We all have different strengths and talents. It comes more naturally to you and there is nothing wrong with that.”

She turns a bit red and looks down. “Well, not every subject comes naturally to me. I could certainly do better in math but it’s just difficult for me.” she says dejectedly. “I just don’t seem to be able to fully grasp the concepts.”

“Wow, I can really relate to that. I am struggling with math also.” he tells her.

“Maybe we could…” She stops suddenly.

“You were going to suggest studying together?”

“I didn’t mean to be so forward.”

“Come on Yuri, we’re friends aren’t we? I don’t know that I would be much help, but we can give it a try, can’t we?”

“If it wouldn’t be too much trouble.”

“Sure. Let’s try to set something up next week once we get into the lessons a bit further.”

I happen to look over at Sayori and notice a troubled look on her face. That is very uncharacteristic of her. Even though she doesn’t wear her “happy mask” all the time, she is rarely upset. I wonder if she has feelings for Kishi. It wouldn’t surprise me for as long as they have been friends. But, I have to get back to the meeting.

“Well, we have a proposal that has been suggested. How does everyone feel about doing the poems once a week?”

Natsuki offers her opinion first. “Well, it really doesn’t matter much to me as I am not in the same situation as you all.”

“Sorry Natsuki…I guess we tend to forget that sometimes.” I reply. “Don’t be afraid to let us know if we get too focused on our third-year problems. We don’t want to leave you out of conversations.” She waves her hand dismissively.

Sayori speaks up next. “As much as I love reading your poems, I guess we do have to face up to our work. Not that it was good for me to just get by before, but if I want to get a better job I should work on bringing up my grades.”

“Didn’t your grades start to improve last year after you started therapy though?” Kishi says. “I thought that you were pleasantly surprised with you final exams last year.”

“Yes, they did. It really helps when you show up to class more often and can actually stay awake and concentrate.” she says with a weak smile.

“Hey, that’s major props to you for doing what you needed to get better. I am very proud of the progress that you have made!” The rest of us nod in agreement which causes her to blush.

“Well, you all played a big part in helping me and I am very thankful. I’m not sure that I deserve…”

Kishi cuts her off with a stern look. We are all very watchful over her words, not wanting her to fall back into depression.

“Sorry…those thoughts haven’t totally gone away yet.”

“We’re all here for you Sayori,” Yuri says softly, “and we’ll try our best to keep you on track. I believe that you will overcome this!”

“Thanks Yuri. That means a lot to me. I don’t know what I’d do without your help.”

And now there is a dark cloud hanging over the room. It’s as if each of us immediately fast-forwarded to the end of the year when we will likely be going in very different directions. Will we be able to stay in touch if we are miles away from each other?

“Okay, Let’s just go with weekly poems for now and see how it goes. The first one will be due next week. Maybe we can add a book event during the breaks.” Everyone seems to be in agreement.

“If no one has anything else to discuss, I guess we can go ahead and adjourn for today. Feel free to stay and read or study if you want to. I will stay for a little while.”

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chapter Three: Monika Shares

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It’s Saturday, but no time for rest. Tennis practice starts early on these days, which is okay when the forecast is hot. I enjoy playing in the cool of the morning much more than the heat of the day. When that ends, I think about the studying I have to do. I have already been preparing for the university entrance exam…so much pressure to do well. But today, my heart isn’t in it.

My parents have really been talking to me a lot lately about my future and their plans for it. Why does it have to be their way? I mean, I appreciate all of the things that they have done for me, but why do I not have any say in my future? It is really starting to bother me. I don’t want to be disobedient, but…

Then, an idea comes to me. I know that the other girls have often gone to Kishi for advice. He is honest and trustworthy, so, maybe he could help me deal with this conflict. I look at my watch. Ten-thirty. Is he even up yet? I know that he often plays video games late into the night, especially on Fridays and Saturdays. Well, I guess if I am going to postpone studying, I can wait for a reply.

“Hey, just wanted to know if we could meet together somewhere this morning.”

“I just woke up and will need some time to eat and get cleaned up.”

I send a laughing emoji to him.

“I should have known!”

We agree upon a café that is about half-way between our houses. He got there before me and ordered me a black coffee. Hmm…how did he know that I drink black coffee?

I smile at him. “That was sweet of you, but you didn’t have to do that.”

“Aw, it was the least I could do considering I’ve probably wasted half your day by sleeping in.” he jokes.

“Up late with video games again, I suppose.”

The smile on his face gives him away.

“So what’s going on?” he asks.

“Actually, do you think that we could find a place not so…busy?”

“Sure! There is a park a couple of blocks over that will be a bit quieter. Will that work?”

“Sounds good.”

We are quiet as we make the short journey to the park. We find a bench in a somewhat secluded spot.

“I really appreciate you taking the time to meet with me. This is not easy for me to do, but I feel it’s necessary.” I pause. “Most people seem to think that I have it all together. They see my accomplishments and think that I have such a great life. Well, it’s not all peaches and cream. In some ways, I am just like Sayori, in that I wear a mask to keep others away and hope that they won’t see the sadness. You’ve noticed my mask slip a couple of times, haven’t you?”

He nods in agreement.

“The truth is, I’m not a very happy person. I am torn between what my parents want for me…no…expect of me, and what I want. I feel that I can’t let them down since they have given so much to me. They have worked so hard to build their business and they have been laying the plans for me to take over after university.”

Now my eyes are starting to water. He reaches over and grabs my hand. I start to apologize, but he doesn’t let me.

“It’s okay. You are human after all.”

“I know,” I continue. “I’ve tried to talk to them a couple of times, but it always ends with them asking why I want to dishonor them. That’s not what I want at all. But I know that I cannot be happy doing what they want me to do. So, in order to keep peace in the house, I go along with their wishes and demands. Lately though, it’s getting harder and harder to do. I guess with the end of school drawing near, the urgency of the situation is growing. I know what is expected of me, but I can’t say that my heart would be in it.”

He looks shocked.

He finally responds. “What do you want to do?”

“I am not sure. But…” I pause.

“Yes?”

“Well, you know that I started playing the piano last year. I’ve found that I really enjoy it. It allows me to escape to other worlds and brings peace to me. But with all of the other busyness in my life, I hardly get to play. The first day of school, I went in during study period and was playing a tune that I came up with in my head. The music teacher came in and asked me what song I was playing. I told her that it didn’t have a name…that I had just made it up. She seemed shocked and said that it was very beautiful. Then she asked how long I had been taking lessons. When I told her that I had never had lessons, she almost insisted that I meet with her to discuss it. I got really excited for a moment, and then remembered my parents and their plans for me. That burst my balloon very quickly.”

“Wow! I knew that there was a lot of pressure in your life, but I had no idea that it was this involved. I thought it was just about maintaining the high standard of performance that you’ve had for years. This is a lot more complicated than that. So what are you going to do?”

“I don’t know. That is why I wanted to talk with you. I guess I’m hoping that you can help me decide.”

“Geez Monika, I don’t think that I can offer anything to help you. That’s a very hard situation to be in. I can understand your parents wishes, although I think that they are hurting you by putting so much pressure on you. Anyone who has worked hard to build something would naturally want their children to carry on with their dream. But then again, that is their dream, not yours. Are you not allowed to have your own dream?:

“Exactly!” I reply.

“You don’t have any brothers or sisters that could take over the business instead of you?” he asks.

“Umm…” I can’t finish as tears are now flooding from my eyes. “I…had…an older brother, but…”

I struggle to pull a tissue out of my backpack.

“Oh Monika! I’m so sorry!” he says with concern. “I shouldn’t have…”

I stop him before he can finish. “You didn’t know so you don’t need to apologize. And yes, he would have been the one to take over for them. He would have been so good at it too.”

He doesn’t ask what happened, which I am thankful for. I don’t want to think about that terrible day.

“I feel so sorry for you and I hate that you’ve been keeping this bottled up inside you. I am glad that you are sharing this with me.”

“Well, I knew that you were aware of some of it, judging from comments you made to me. I also know that you are a good listener. I thought you would give me some honest feedback. I just wish you had some magical solution that would make my parents happy and me happy too.”

“Yeah,” he replies glumly, “I am not sure that there is enough magic in the world to make that happen. Let me think about this for a while and see if anything comes to mind. This was a lot to take in at one time.”

“Okay. I have to be going anyways. Studying never goes away. One other thing, if I may ask. Don‘t tell the others please.”

“Keeping the mask on for them?” he says in a slightly condemning tone.

“For now.” I tell him. “I guess I am not quite ready for that. It was hard enough just to talk to you. But I know that you are a special guy and that I can trust you.” And with that, I head towards home, hoping I don’t have to sit through another lecture.

2020.09.15 16:52 Ideasandthoughts [AMNESIA] [Spoilers] My lengthy character analysis of Toma

I know this sub is probably tired of talking about Toma by now, but this post is for the few that may still have some interest in discussing about him.
Sorry for the lengthy post, but I figured if I was gonna talk about him, might as well put out everything I have xD
My interpretation mainly comes from the games and other Amnesia material. I also try to read the common comments by players (both English and Japanese)
My personal interpretation of Toma:
Toma is a very interesting character. First of all, as with the other LIs, his relationship with the MC in the game differs according to the route.
1. In pretty much all the worlds (including the non-canon worlds in the sequel games) with probably the exception of Clover world he is always among the closest people to MC, like he’s so close but never really close enough to become lovers.
Heart World - MC’s childhood friend along with Shin. He obviously has feelings for her but is unable to become more than friends as MC and Shin are dating.
Spade World - MC’s step brother (i.e. probably the closest person to her after Ikki)
Clover World - MC’s coworker. Unrelated to MC, but is Shin’s brother (he always becomes someone’s onii-chan no matter what lmao)
Diamond World - MC’s childhood friend. The only LI who doesn’t start out as MC’s boyfriend :( In love with MC but unable to get out of the brothefriend relationship out of fear of ruining the relationship and also due to believing that MC was dating Ikki
Joker World - Again, childhood friends with MC and Shin. It’s not clear if he has romantic feelings but at one point in the route, Ukyo advises you not to take sides with Shin and Toma, so…
2. He’s often the one that gets ditched/left behind… either people leave him out or he does it on his own
Heart World - Feels left behind when MC and Shin started dating. Often mentions wanting to go back to the past throughout the route. In Shin’s good end, Toma leaves to a faraway place due to guilt and makes sure he can’t come in between them anymore (poor boy T_T)
Spade World - Takes care of the sick MC overnight but gets chased out by Ikki LMAO. Also mentions to MC that she always tried to handle things by herself even when he told her to rely more on him, before saying that she now has Ikki to rely on.
Clover World - offers relationship advice to MC but gets told off by Sawa xD Also, stays back and handles the cafe all by himself (like how??) while everybody else goes to have fun in the pool
Diamond World - in the Normal ending he leaves MC and Shin after handing over the proof he gathered, quitting university and losing all his friends (T_T)
3. Otomate likes to make him suffer u_u
He’s the only LI who has CGs for his Bad endings (both in the original Amnesia, and in Amnesia Crowd). Ukyo specifically tells you that he has rarely seen Toma have happy endings. The cage is so iconic at this point that it keeps being brought up again and again in the sequels and drama CDs, even having the other characters tease him repeatedly about it. Every time the cage is brought up Toma just becomes depressed… poor boyyyy
4. Has very low confidence, is prone to self-loathing and a very interesting contrast to Shin
While Shin can be harsh and tactless with his words, truth is very important to him. On the other hand, Toma is sweet and caring but would lie and hide things that he believes would hurt MC and Shin while trying to bear it all on his own. He is also aware that he has a terrible personality outside of being a reliable brother figure, which is why he is very afraid of being hated by MC and Shin, who are the closest to him and rely on him.
5. He is a very misunderstood character (and a large part of his route I feel is also misunderstood)
I feel like one of the many reasons Japanese players love him so much is because they have access to other Amnesia content that unfortunately English speakers don’t. There are the fandiscs, drama CDs and manga adaptations, but there is also a novel series that shed light on the LI’s route from his perspective (there is a novel for each character). While I already liked him before, after reading everything from his POV I understood his actions better and liked him so much more >///<
Some things about his story:
i. Prior to August 1st, MC and Toma have not met for 3 months because MC was avoiding him (it was Ikki’s advice to put some distance between them). In those 3 months, Toma was confused and hurt by the distance but upon hearing that MC had been meeting with Ikki a lot, concludes that MC was distancing herself because she started dating Ikki
ii. Finds out about the harassment towards MC on August 1st when he saw her phone, mailbox and threatening messages while picking up her stuff at her apartment
iii. Decides not to tell MC about the harassment and hides anything that would lead to her finding out (cleans up her mailbox, gets her a new phone, hides her laptop battery and cord to prevent her from accessing it). He does this because he knew MC had amnesia and she seemed completely spaced out and confused. He did not want her to feel frightened
iv. Lies to her about being her boyfriend and convinces the manager to let her off work for the rest of the month in order to distance her from Ikki and her coworkers. If she tried to get close to Ikki again the fanclub harassment would escalate. If she went to work she would meet Mine, who is also part of the fanclub. He was unsure who was involved and who wasn’t, so he could not risk letting her near them. That said, he mentioned several times (even in the game itself) that he had fully intended to return her to Ikki and get out of her life forever once everything was settled
v. In the game from MC’s POV most of the days was spent sitting around at home waiting for Toma to come home. The novel highlights the things Toma was doing besides cleaning up the mailbox, removing posters and deleting messages. He was busy installing a hidden camera (but first had to get permission to do so), tracking down IP addresses, gathering info, etc all the while having to deal with the MC’s difficult landlord, his university professor, and Shin later on. He had considered going to the police but was stopped by the landlord and also believed that the police wouldn’t be able to do much without concrete evidence other than patrolling the area, which could lead to more unpredictable harassment methods
vi. While some people say his yandere-ness came out of nowhere, I have to disagree because you could clearly see even in the game (even without playing Shin’s route beforehand) that he slowly snaps a bit harder every time something terrible happens to MC or she goes out by herself. By the time he resorts to more extreme methods, 3 attempts have already been made on her life and she has gone out on her own multiple times. While it’s clear he was madly obsessed with keeping MC safe, he was driven further to that point by stress, sleep deprivation, frustration at the lack of progress in his evidence gathering, his thesis deadline, and his feelings of failure when he realised MC found out about the harassment, meaning he failed to keep her continually happy and blissfully unaware
vii. Feels extreme guilt at the end of his route and in the subsequent games tells MC they could break up anytime if she changes her mind about him, tells Shin the truth and lets him punch the crap out of him, lets MC cage and handcuff him in return… only then did he feel better about being in a relationship with MC
6. Has a special “Doubt” parameter in his route that other LIs don’t.
Naturally we would think of doubt as the opposite of trust, and that we should keep this parameter as low as possible to achieve the good ending. That is not the case in this route, though. To get the good ending, you’ll need a high doubt parameter - in fact, some choices that raise doubt also raise affection/trust. To raise doubt, you’ll need to select options that lead to MC sensing some contradiction in Toma’s words or actions. If you stick only with safe options or blindly trust everything he tells you, a low doubt parameter will lead to the Normal/Bad ending instead. I wondered why this was the case since Toma seems to want MC to listen to him and do everything he says. I have a theory from replaying his route in the game and his POV in the novel. If MC simply accepts whatever he tells her, he is well aware of it and comes to a conclusion that she is too careless with her own safety since she has proven to be overly gullible. An example in the game is when he asks if MC had realised that he was cleaning up her mailbox and MC replies with “You were doing that…?”. He will then say something along the lines of her being so unaware of the dangers surrounding her that he has to be overprotective of her for that reason. This is reflected in the bad ending, where MC becomes a soulless doll who just repeats whatever he tells her and becomes unable to think for herself, requiring her being locked up and isolated so he can protect her forever
7. Has consistently ranked in the top positions in popularity polls among Japanese players
While we could say it’s because Tsunderes and Yanderes are popular tropes in Japan, it’s definitely more than that. Amnesia first came out in Japan in 2011 - it’s not a new game. At that time, yanderes existed in anime/manga (and were usually female) but not so much in otome games. When Amnesia was released, it became a hugely popular and successful series because it was quite unlike any other otome games at the time (some people even called it a half-horror game lol). Toma shocked people in particular because there wasn’t really a character like him before and his route was very unusual. He made a lasting impression on players but instead of hatred, they love him because he was such a nice brotherly figure and even when he snapped and did those crazy things he did them with the MC’s safety in mind.
There are far more Japanese otome game players since they have such a wide selection compared to Western players. LIs that are somewhat possessive have always existed in otome games, in fact almost all LI exhibit at least a little bit of this at some point in their routes. I suppose it makes them less weirded out by Toma (who is a more extreme version) and are far less likely to dislike him since they’ve encountered so many LIs who are at least possessive in some way, compared to Western players, many who have never played an otome game before Amnesia.
Another example is Kent, who is basically the “most normal” LI with a route that has the largest romantic focus. He tends to rank lower than the other LI in polls, but rather than because he is disliked (in fact, there are plenty of Kent lovers!) I feel it’s more because Kent’s type of character is very common in otome games that Japanese players probably already encountered dozens of them prior to Kent.*
Tbh while most people consider Toma a yandere, whether he really is one is debatable. (or he could be one that’s atypical) He doesn’t murder the MC or his love rivals (if he did Ikki would be dead) and he expresses a lot of remorse. He’s nowhere near as violent as some other yanderes that go way beyond But the fact that he was so… attention-grabbing contributed to his iconic status. He may have contributed to the subsequent increase of yandere LIs in otome games xD
Another reason why there might be differing opinions of him in the English fandom is due to the time it was released. The localisation came out years after the original, and with people increasingly becoming more vocal about equality and against abuse this definitely didn’t sit well with lots of people. If it came out around the same time as the JP version I don’t think there would’ve been as much backlash.
Also, in my personal opinion a lot of people feel more bothered by him than, say, Ukyo even though Ukyo can outright murder MC because Toma just seemed so… real in his madness. With Ukyo, you could easily tell which mode he was in and his mad persona comes and goes like an on/off switch… it almost gave a sort of cartoonish effect instead. As for Toma, he starts out sweet but the discomfort and creepiness has always been there, and it gradually increases as the story progresses. Even in his mad state he maintains his eerie calmness, and it gets to a point where you can’t really tell if he’s being nice or scary. His actions like drugging and isolating the MC hit closer to home because they are actual possible things that people can do irl (not necessarily going as far as using a cage, but locking someone inside the house definitely is doable), compared to things like pushing someone into a well or dropping someone from the hospital rooftop. It would make sense why Toma scares people more
Anyways this post has gone on long enough and I might have left out some stuff but feel free to share your opinions! I might do a character interpretation of the other LIs but they’re probably much shorter since they’re less… controversial lol.
TLDR: Toma is a cute, adorable, cinnamon bun……………………… ;)
\Also, Kent fans in this sub shouldn’t feel sad! He is actually pretty well-liked in the Japanese fandom from what I’ve seen, and everyone agrees he has the most peaceful route :D.*
I’ve actually seen two polls some years back that were basically top 10 otome game characters who players want as their 1) boyfriend; 2) husband
Shin and Ikki were top 10 in the boyfriend list while Ukyo and Kent were in the husband list and Toma ranked in both xD
I guess players generally agree that Shin and Ikki are more boyfriend material while Ukyo and Kent make great husbands. Toma, well…. he’s Toma LMAO

Big dork, I love manga, gaming, anime, you name it.
Im just a down to earth dude. I love making people laugh, I probably do way too much to make sure my friends are happy. Basically if you need a friend to help you through something, talk about it, etc, I’m your guy!
Im not much a partier, but I do love some Irish coffee and learning how to mix drinks.
Ive gotten three years of college under my belt but currently im looking to find a career so I can focus on moving out! (Actually have an interview in the morning!)
Honestly, a good date to me sounds like a nice day at the beach, heading home and making dinner together while we geek about music, watch some good shows together and just laugh and live 🙂 (that sounds really weird now that I typed that out, I cant say I’ve had a date end where we just die at the end 😂 No Romeo/Juliet stuff plz)
Okay, bonus for making it to the end, meet my big tubby cat, Zen. (had one of me holding her but imgur is being quite a bitch about uploading it) HMU though! (:

Okay, bonus for making it to the end, meet my big tubby cat, Zen. (had one of me holding her but imgur is being quite a bitch about uploading it) HMU though! (:

2020.09.15 02:08 Datoneblackguy Off-topic: If a metalcore band and/or song was referenced in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, which would you prefer?

For those of you who may not know what JoJos is, Per wikipedia:
"JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (Japanese: ジョジョの奇妙な冒険, Hepburn: JoJo no Kimyō na Bōken) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Hirohiko Araki. It was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1987 to 2004, and was transferred to the monthly seinen manga magazine Ultra Jump in 2005. The series is divided into eight story arcs, each following the adventures of a new protagonist bearing the "JoJo" nickname; the eighth, JoJolion, began its ongoing serialization in May 2011. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is Shueisha's second largest manga by volume count, with its chapters collected in 127 tankōbon volumes as of April 2020.
...
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is well-known for its iconic art style and poses, frequent references to Western popular music and fashion, and creative battles centered around Stands, psycho-spiritual manifestations with unique supernatural abilities. The series has sold over 100 million copies in print to date, making it one of the best-selling manga series in history, and it has spawned a media franchise including one-shot manga, light novels, and video games. The manga, TV anime, and live-action film are licensed in North America by Viz Media, which has produced various English-language releases of the series since 2005."
This question popped into my head earlier while I was reading JoJo's and thought, if I had the choice of what band/song from the metalcore genre was going to be referenced in this manga, which would I pick?
Extra fun is coming up with what kind of a charactestand would fit with said band or song.

2020.09.15 01:30 throwaway72543432 the story of a lonely guy

This is more of a storytime thing rather than just a rant or me complaining about my life etc. Also using a throwaway for reasons that will be apparent as you read.So I am a 35 year old male that has never had a girlfriend and I just wanted to share my story and dating life. I will mention right up here that I do have autism and an anxiety disorder and am 5'2 so you can keep that in mind as you read through this.
When I was a teenager I was just sort of an average kid for the area I lived in and for the time. I spent a lot of time playing video games and going to school that kind of generic stuff. However once I got into my early teens I started trying to get a girlfriend. For some reason ever since I was little I have always wanted to get married and be a husband so that was sort of a top priority for me my whole life rather than making money so I focused on that through my teens. The kind of relationship with a girl I always envisioned for myself was one where me and my wife are absolute best friends that support and help each other in everything we do, the king where even though we are married I still take her out on dates every weekend and do fun stuff with her, Unfortunately all of my friends were guys so girls didnt really take notice of me. I wasnt really super ugly or anything but I am a very average looking guy so it isnt like I stood out that much. I tried joining clubs at school that had a lot of girls in them like the french club or the school christian club. However I have autism as aforementioned and people always seemed to perceive me as different. I joined these mostly girl clubs and despite it being a social gathering I always got butted out of conversations and would spend time alone hoping I could talk to someone while I normally instead got to watch the girls talk to the generic "chad" type of guy. As I got towards the end of my time in highschool like halfway through 11th grade I started getting into anime and manga, normally I would read romantic novels and stuff like that. I even would read books like Twilight since it was sort of like a surrogate for my own desires for a relationship. I decided I would have better luck in university
Fastforward to my college years and I majored in engineering eventually getting my masters. During college all of my old friends from HS and I parted ways and I never really made any new friends during my time at university. As you might guess this made my time even harder trying to meet girls since I dont even have a social circle outside of just being in a class with them. During my first 2 years I had my elective and general ed classes so I met girls fairly regularly and would try to strike up conversations with them during class about whatever the subject was and normally they seemed pretty receptive of me until we would hangout at my dorm where I had my manga and anime collection. Keep in mind this was during the early 00s so anime wasnt as mainstream as it is now. As soon as any girl saw that they basically would stop talking to me altogether unless I approached them during class. Once I stopped having regular interactions with girls in my last 4 years of uni since there were almost no girls in my engineering classes I sort of gave up with the expectation that once I get a job and graduate I would have better luck since I would have money then to help so I just went back to watching romantic movies and reading novels to sort of replace the actual human interaction I craved.
After I graduated i managed to get a pretty good job at a firm making 70k starting off. It wasnt the absolute best I could do but it was in the same town that my parents lived in so I was able to live with my parents rent free while I saved up money. Even better during this time the stock market was taking a hit due to the recession so I decided to start investing almost all of my money into the stock market to start my retirement fund(this is relevant later). Once I was really entrenched in my career and was still not meeting girls I decided to make dating profiles on multiple dating websites. this was around 2011 and I went on a dry spell of 6 years (yes 6 years on multiple dating websites!) without ever getting a match!) During this 6 years I would try to get involved with as many singles groups and other sort of young adult things at my church to try and meet more girls. I would try to get older people to set me up with their kids but they were never interested in me. I would even change churches every year or go to multichurch events in town where multiple churches would get together to do stuff and had no luck there either. Sure enough no luck here either. I eventually made a reddit account in 2013 and as such all my friends are just people I play video games with or talk about anime with online.
after 6 years on dating websites I finally met a girl online near the end of 2017. She wasnt really what I had in mind when I fantasized about being married and getting a wife. She was an animation student in her early 20s while I was in my early 30s. She had sort of that "hipster" or new look. She had pink hair, a nosering and that hairstyle where she has sort of a mohawk/long hair on half of her head and the other half is shaved short. she was also an atheist which is weird since I am a christian. We chatted for about 3 months before meeting. We seemed to hit it off pretty well and she was also really into anime and manga just like me although she preferred gundam and mech anime instead of the romcom stuff I liked. We went on dates twice a week for about 2 months before my parents went out of town and I brought her home to my place. We were watching little witch academia on netflix when she got up to go to the restroom and she apparently went in my room because she saw my trump "MAGA" hat and brought it back into the living room and confronted me about it. It was almost comical how interrogative and angry she was when she approached me about it. She asked me if I had voted for trump in 2016 and when I told yea thats why I got the hat she just lost it and said she could "never be with a man that would vote for such a racist, sexist and woman hating pig like Trump". She left and cut all ties with me that night. You might say I dodged a bullet with her after that outburst but keep in mind I was 32 years old and this is the ONLY bullet that was ever fired my way in my whole life.
almost 3 years later I have yet to get any new matches on my online dating accounts. Still living with my parents and working at the same engineering firm I started out at over 10 years ago. I eventually sort of caved in and decided to go full weeb over the last year. My room used to just have bookshelves filled with anime and manga but now my whole room is full of anime girl posters and plushies and figmas. I even bought 2 dakimakuras (body pillows) and covers for them and even have one that has arms that I can wrap around me when I sleep to sort of be like I am cuddling someone. I even got to the point where since I cant get any dates sometimes when my parents are gone I will sit at the table with one of my dakimakuras across from me and sort of have a dinner date with it to simulate having a wife(sort of like when an old person loses their husband/wife but still carry around a picture of their SO and pretend like they are still there). I havent completely given up hope on finding a wife someday but I do get the occasional burst of emotion when I cry myself to sleep or when I am in public and see a happy couple I get jealous and sad about it.
I guess the only thing I do have sort of going for me is that between my job making 120k a year and me investing in the stock market which now makes me about 50k a year on its own and living with my parents I can retire when I am 45 since am my parents only child and will inherit the property and stuff. So financially I am set and am happy about that. I dont really know what the ultimate purpose of this post was other than to say I am sort of sad and hate my life in every way except for how much money I have which even then isnt a ton just enough that I am sort of comfortable. I always imagined having a wife and kids by now and being able to do family stuff and have my parents have grandkids and all that stuff.

2020.09.14 08:17 perark05 26 [M4F][Brighton, UK] Virgin engineer looking for "operating instructions". No manual, all enthusiasm!

Hey all
Let's start with the physical stats: Brown hair green eyes, I'm 6ft (or a very tall 5ft 11", take your pick). 16st, i won't ever be a slim jim but have more of a stocky rugby type build with bulky legs from rowing (never skip leg day) and broad shoulders from bodyweight training. There's a Bit of upper ab definition if you squint in good light but I love my food too much.
Now let go with the fruity filling inside, the personality. I'm a unashamed nerd, I have a background in astronautics and am a keen watcher of anime/manga and comic book films (BvS is bad. Sorry) and I am a avid player of games of both the tabletop and video variety. With my fav genre of rpg's, although I'm also happy after a log day to turn off my brain and play a fps or two like halo. I have a very dry sense of humor, I like to keep up to date with all that happens in the world and I love a good relaxed political debate after a drink or two.
Now the big question: what do I want out of this apart from the obvious. The answer to that is that I don't know exactly, the most I've done is make out with a few girls in clubs. What I know that I don't want is just a emotionless "stick it in a few time then walk away". I'm not looking for a relationship but I do want a connection, I want us to have a good chat and a laugh and let things go organicly and if we go out separate paths afterwards thats fine, but one thing I do want equal pleasure from my side and yours, I want to learn what feels good for you and reciprocate all you give me, I want us to both feel good.
Hopefully this sounds interesting enough without being to word-y, I have a car and flat so I'm happy to host or be hosted. Let's see how this goes.

2020.09.14 03:35 palpsdidnothingwrong How Do You Deal With the Male "Friend" ?

Question: How do you deal with a girlfriend's Male Friend who she spends a lot of time with? And when is something too much and what are boundaries that shouldnt be crossed? And is spending time at a male friends house crossing the line? I got broken up with due to showing insecurity, it seems that anytime a guy shows insecurity or gets jealous it ends bad for him, when there is genuine concern or worry, how does a man deal with it without his woman walking out on him?
Backstory to my question: Unfortunately my LDR relationship of 2 years ended around 1-2 months ago. My girlfriend and I had not seen eachother due to COVID in 5 months and after the summer holidays she was back at school then work and not having as much time (but we spent a lot of time during the holidays). She was going to the city with a male friend and mimicking the things we did together when i took her on dates and she was spending time at the male friends house. I got insecure about this but i didnt want to tell her so i covered it up and told her it was something else i was insecure about which made it worse since i said something pretty trivial about a guy she semi flirted with online on a video game which i didnt care about, although she thought i was so dumb and insecure for being worried about some idiot on a video game. Anyway we drifted apart and she lost attraction for me before breaking up and i told her the truth after we broke up that i was insecure about her male friend who she was spending time with and that she was crossing a boundary by going to his house. She said she knew him for 4 years (we were together 2 years) and his parents were at home and hes innocent and just a friend who likes her innocently and not because shes a girl. She was mad about the thing i covered it up with instead of telling her the truth of how i felt a month previous and she thought the video game thing was dumb because she said i was playing detective by watching what she was doing so i made the problem twice worse by covering it up with something silly. So both these things made me seem insecure and she probably figured the distance wasnt worth it if her guy was insecure like that. Since we broke up, unfortunately my feed on instagram of the pages we both follow shows memes about missing your favourite person when they leave or things about love that she's liking and she is reading manga and playing the same games as that friend. I dont know if she went into a rebound relationship with this guy friend because of my insecurity pushing her away or if she was just cheating to begin with, but ive been reflecting and working to fix my insecurities, i was just stressed with COVID and i didnt act like a man who shouldnt bother about girls. I know now that if someone will cheat they will, but you shouldnt show insecurity or worry about another guy since your girlfriend chose you, unfortunately i cant turn back time.
TL:DR: LDR relationship of 2 years ended. During Covid we didnt see eachother for 5 months. GF spent time with a guy friend a lot mirroring the dates i had with her. I got insecure and jealous and covered it up with something dumb to mask my insecurity and made it worse. She slowly lost feelings when i didnt address the problem over the phone directly or talk to her about it (only texted) and she broke up with me a month later. She spends time and shares new interests with this guy friend now and likes memes about love and missing her favourite person after they leave etc. Did she date him due to my insecurity and they were just friends before or are they still friends? And what should a man do or act like when they feel something is shady with their girlfriends male friend instead of acting insecure?

2020.09.13 10:43 gabrurdesodio 25 [M4F] Europe/Anywhere - Winter is near and I'm like a heater

Surely start writting out of nowhere your feelings, what you've ever looked for in a relationship and present yourself is hard.
I'm an introvert person, maybe that's why I write this right here. I think reddit is an awesome platform with awesome people (with exceptions, obviously), so I thought about giving a try posting my letter in a bottle hoping it will reach someone who was waiting for me.
Nowadays I'm pretty happy when it comes about my life. Finally got the job I wanted, conserved a couple of good friends who won't kill me even when I say a lot of bad jokes, started being constant and less lazy... but when it comes to having a deeply connection when someone, who will be impatient to spend time with you, listen to your nonsense always with the same enthusiasm... lately I miss that.
I want you to think about me when you discover a random fact that surprised you, when you suddenly want to go for a nocturn walk, whenever you need to say something out of your chest or when you just need a silent hug.
Be your best friend, your confident, your travel companion; and starting to build together the rest of our lives.
>> Some attributes I hope you value too <<
· Honestity and empathy - Because honestity without empathy may be cruelty. You can always try to reach other's hearts without hurting them. Unless they like pinapple pizza.
· Loyalty - yes
· Communication - Important, I can read hints but I've not developed yet my mind-reading module. Developers are working on the next update.
· Enthusiasm and effort - Nothing discourage me more than talking to someone who won't show any will to know me. Let's not waste our time, this should not be way of killing time!
· Hooman - I do not date robots, sorry if you are offended.
· Ghosting is bad - Just tell the other one you don't feel the same or you are not interested anymore because of whatever. Isn't that hard, c'mon.
>> About the hopeless romantic writting this <<
Loves nature and hopes to live in a house with enough space to hold a bbq, a pool... and the hammock he will be sharing with you on sunday's morning while drinking a coffee, prepared obviously with the espresso machine you had to buy him last Christmas like the coffee snob he is.
Oh, the house may have a big garage because he likes to repair himself the house's thingys and the classic car(s) you will enjoy together.
He's taking you to places baby, because he likes to drive. Also the main hobbies would be hiking, trail running (this year discovered it and couldn't love it more), videogames (may you play with him a shitty game or maybe league? oh but that are synonyms), anime/manga/lightnovels and overthinking about things he should not. You may encourage him to play the piano more often (he is starting on his own this year but shhh)!
The hugs are amazing, especially in winter since he may be an oven.
Enjoys documentaries (especially about animals).
Will give a try at everything you like, will support you on all your hobbies and dreams, putting your feet on the ground if needed.
How I Met Your Mother is one of his favourite shows, also My Name is Earl and some others he can't remember because of his fish memory.
He's more of a dog person, specially large ones.
Can spend evenings searching info about some topic he just discovered and thought it was interesting. The same applies in looking for the best option to buy whatever. Oh men a lot of evenings... pls stop
And I think I will stop here, so you can discover the rest chatting with me.
To the 0 people that made it this far, hope you enjoyed the reading and I will be waiting for your message (I'd love a long message telling me what you felt reading it or what you liked the most!). This is me: https://imgur.com/a/X5fUtWF

2020.09.13 05:09 Mitch_NZ If you're curious about getting into the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise, I wrote an absolute wall-of-text overview of everything you could possibly want to know before jumping in, with zero spoilers.

If you are the sort of person that likes to just hit the play button on a new show, the below isn't for you. If you're like me and like to be overprepared before jumping into a big franchise, read on...

What’s the deal with Neon Genesis Evangelion? I keep hearing about it.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is the name of an anime and also a manga series that both started in the mid 1990s. Since then, it’s grown into a major franchise with numerous spinoffs, and a merchandise empire to rival Star Wars. Beloved in its homeland of Japan and by fans all over the planet, Neon Genesis Evangelion’s early releases still hold up to the very best today, and as of 2020 the franchise is still active with new entries on the horizon.
If you’re curious about this series and want to see what all the fuss is about, you could just dive head-first into it, but if you’re like me, you suffer from severe franchise anxiety, worrying about getting into it “wrong”. Well, that’s where I come in. I’m going to tell you all the things that my overthinking ass wished I knew back when I first jumped into it a long time ago. You can read this whole guide and not be spoiled about any story details.
Throughout this guide, I’ll use the word “Evangelion” as an abbreviation for the franchise as a whole. As well as “Evangelion”, fans may use the full title “Neon Genesis Evangelion” to refer to the franchise, or the acronym “NGE”, or simply “Eva”.

I feel like this franchise is really complicated. Where do I even start? How does it all fit together?

I remember hearing a friend tell me that he was curious about getting into the series but felt overwhelmed by the many entries and didn’t know where to start. It was sad to hear that, because in actual fact, the franchise structure is very simple. This isn’t Gundam.
The most important part of Evangelion is what I’ll call the “core Evangelion story”, and it’s the primary continuity. This begins with the 26-episode anime series, plus the theatrical film The End of Evangelion. That’s it! That’s the core story. All you need to do is watch the series, then the movie. Everything else is a spinoff or bonus content in one form or another. There’s no “true” sequel to the core story*.
*sort-of

Okay, so I start with the TV series?

Yep! The original show (which I’ll just call NGE from here on in) ran for a single season of 26 episodes between 1995 and 1996 in Japan, and each episode aired in a half-hour timeslot, so episode lengths are generally 21-23 minutes each. It won’t take you long to get through it (although I recommend NOT binging it all at once for reasons I’ll go into later) unlike many other long-running franchises.
There are some key things to know before you start, though.

Director’s cut episodes

First of all, most versions of NGE released after the airing of the show include an alternative “director’s cut” for episodes 21 to 24. My DVD version allows you to select between the original cut and the director’s cut. If offered a choice, always choose the director’s cut of these episodes. The director’s cuts include several minutes per episode of additional footage. These extra scenes are critical to understanding the story. If you are watching on Netflix, don’t worry, episodes 21 through 24 are the director’s cut versions.

Episode Titles

These can get confusing. If you want to talk about specific episodes with other fans, you may want to try and remember the episode numbers. The titles work too, but there are two of them for each episode, and there are numerous translations of each.
For example, episode three is titled 鳴らない、電話 in Japanese, which roughly translates to “The Phone That Doesn’t Ring”, but it also has an English title, which is “A Transfer”. To make matters worse, the English titles were chosen by Gainax, the animation studio, who are Japanese and aren’t native English speakers, so some of them are a bit awkward-sounding.

Language

We need to talk about dubs and subs. NGE was made by a Japanese studio for Japanese audiences and used a Japanese cast speaking Japanese. As the show soared in popularity, broadcasters around the world took notice and moved quickly to secure rights to dub the show in foreign languages. Since this guide is in English, I’ll only be talking about English adaptations, however the show is available dubbed and subbed in many other languages, and I understand that some of the dubs are considered excellent.

The original Japanese

The original Japanese voice actors deliver a phenomenal, iconic performance. My personal preference is to watch the show in Japanese with English subtitles, and the main reason is because I love the Japanese voice cast and I think they do the best job of conveying the emotions of the characters. Plus, Megumi Ogata’s screams… Blood-curdling. I wouldn’t trade that for anything.
The show is set in a version of Japan, and cultural references to Japan are frequent. In my opinion, these references feel more natural in the original Japanese language, as compared to the dubs which have to find ways to make them make sense in American-accented English.
Most versions of NGE use the same translation for the subtitles, and I think it’s a great translation that captures the intention of the original Japanese whilst making sensible choices to ensure that it reads naturally in English. The Netflix subs are a new translation, and are much stricter in sticking to the Japanese wording, but many longtime fans are unhappy with the way certain scenes appear to have their meaning or context quite significantly altered by this new translation. I haven’t closely compared the two translations, but some of the things I’ve read about the Netflix translation certainly sound concerning to me as a longtime fan. Still – if Netflix is your only means of watching the series, I don’t think it’s a deal-breaker!
The downside of watching a subtitled anime is the same as always: Your immersion in the visuals is hampered by the need to keep an eye on the bottom of the screen to read subtitles, and NGE’s dialogue can get a bit hectic at times. You’ll need to be an attentive reader to keep up with the play at some points. I find that I can still appreciate the visuals of the show while reading the subtitles, but for many, it’s far more preferable to hear the dialogue in their native language, and for that, you’ll need to decide between the two English dubs that have been officially released.

The original English dub

The original English dub was produced by ADV Films not long after the show started airing in Japan, and the studio were operating on a tight budget, short timeframe and a limited pool of voice acting talent. Also it was 1996, and anime dubbing in 1996 was a very different artform to today. The result is that the original dub of NGE sounds a bit like a children’s cartoon from 1996… Which is exactly what it was in many ways. Despite this, the original dub has many passionate fans, and as the series progresses, the performances increase in quality. Most of the main voice cast returned for later series entries as well, and they’ve only got better over time.

The Netflix dub

Netflix surprised everyone when in 2019 they brought the entire series to their platform… With a brand-new translation and dub. This new dub has generated a lot of controversy, and the main reason is that none of the original voice cast reprised their role, and many were never even invited to audition. It also has a reworked script, just as the subtitles have, and many of the changes upset longtime fans. On the other hand, it’s a much more polished and professional dub than the original, and the translation is closer to the original Japanese in many ways.
My advice to first-timers is to not sweat the decision too much, but if you’re comfortable with reading subtitles, I still think watching it in Japanese is the best way to experience it, but go with whatever suits you best!

The Music

Shiro Sagisu composed the music for NGE, and it’s fantastic. You’re in for a treat. The series’ opening theme is famous, and also a bit of a meme. All I’ll say is if you only heard the opening theme and had to guess what the show was like, you’d be very, very wrong.
The Netflix dub made a pretty major change to the music in that they could not get the rights to the original ending theme, the classic Bart Howard song “Fly Me to the Moon”. Instead, they use one of the series’ prominent cues for the ending theme. The replacement music actually works quite well, but as a longtime fan, it’s difficult to imagine each episode not ending with “Fly Me to the Moon”. If you’re a newbie, it probably won’t make much difference at all, but if you want the “classic” experience, you’ll need to find a version other than the Netflix one.

The Format

NGE is in 4:3 ratio. If your version is somehow in widescreen, press stop immediately because something has gone very wrong. Learn to love the elegance of the 4:3 format.
The whole series is now available in HD, and it looks great, however the animation isn’t so richly detailed that you lose out by watching it in SD. If you only have a DVD copy, don’t sweat it trying to find an HD copy!
There are a fair few releases of the series out there, some of which are highly collectible. I’m not an expert on the differences between them, but as far as I know, there aren’t any “must-avoid” prints you need to worry about.

So, uh, what’s Evangelion even about?

Ask this to most fans and they’ll probably chuckle before a bit before they say anything. That’s because there’s quite a few ways to describe it, and they all sound either shallow and boring, or pretentious and overblown.
The core Evangelion story is about monsters who attack a city in Japan, and the only way to fight them off is by using giant robots, who all happen to be piloted by teenagers. Pretty standard premise, really.

It sounds like a straightforward mecha show.

Glad you said that, because NGE is indeed an entry in the mecha (giant robot) genre of anime.
You’ll hear the phrase “deconstruction” mentioned a lot in reference to this show, but don’t be put off by that. All it means is that prior to 1995, mecha anime and manga were very popular, and they tended to follow a pretty rigid set of tropes. One of NGE’s calling cards is that it intentionally dodges many of the clichés of mecha shows by trying to show how teenagers piloting giant robots against a mysterious enemy would really go down in real life.
The deconstruction aspect of NGE, although prominent, is also not particularly important to a new viewer in 2020, particularly if you aren’t familiar with earlier mecha series. If you are though, I think you’ll appreciate how NGE deals with what seems like a standard premise.
NGE was animated by Gainax, a famous anime studio, and the director was Hideaki Anno. If you’ve seen the 2016 film Shin Godzilla which Anno directed, you’ll notice many similarities between that and this series. If you’ve seen the 1984 Hayao Miyazaki film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, you might see things in NGE that remind you of the scene where the Giant Warrior attacks. Guess who animated that scene!

I heard this show was deep. How deep are we talking?

NGE is the butt of many a meme due to its reputation as a “deep” anime with a complex (or incomprehensible, depending on who you ask) story and themes. My advice is to forget all that. Your expectations going into this show need to be reset if you really want to enjoy it for what it is. All you need to know is that the story is a wild ride, and no matter how clued-up you think you are, it’s going to go places you don’t expect.
You don’t need to do preparatory readings of philosophy papers or religious texts, just go into it with an open mind, and perhaps a reflection on what your own life goals are, how you motivate yourself to achieve them, and also your experiences trying to create and maintain relationships with others. Casting your mind back to how you were in your early teens will help get into the mindset of the main characters too.

Great. I think I’m ready to get started.

That’s good. Just a couple more bits of advice from me:

So I finished the series. What’s this about a movie?

To be clear, there are no spoilers in this guide, so feel free to read this section even if you haven’t watched the series yet!
You’ll hear all sorts of things about The End of Evangelion, the film that was originally released in 1997. All you need to know right now is that it’s the conclusion of the core story. You could not watch it, and leave the story as it is concluded at the end of the series, but you really shouldn’t. This movie is too good to skip, even if it has some notable differences from the series in terms of its general feel and vibe.
You may see the film referred to as episodes 25’ and 26’ (note the apostrophes), or as a replacement ending for the TV series (which also has episodes 25 and 26). Don’t overthink it too much – the film and the end of the series overlap in some ways, which is why the film is structured as two “episodes” that share a number with the final two in the series.
All I’ll say about The End of Evangelion is that you may think after finishing the series that you have been desensitized to the types of things the franchise throws at you. You are wrong. This movie is an even wilder ride than the show, and you are really going to want to take some time to go for a long, meditative walk both before and after it.

I have questions. Lots of questions.

That’s normal. You could watch some of the many “Evangelion explained” videos on YouTube, but I haven’t yet found one that I was really satistfied with. In my opinion, the most rewarding way to get your questions answered is to interact with other Evangelion fans and get their perspective on what it’s all about and exactly what happened. Again, feel free to DM me for this purpose! The Evangelion subreddit is a great community and will be more than happy to share their thoughts with you.
Like many stories, the “correct” interpretation of it is the one that means the most to you. I have my own specific interpretation that works for me, and that may diverge from many other fans’, but that’s okay! Hideako Anno himself would be delighted at all the different meanings that various fans have taken away with them and held onto tightly.

What’s this Death and Rebirth movie? Didn’t it come out before The End of Evangelion?

Skip it. Yes, it did come out between the series and The End of Evangelion, but you don’t need to watch it. It’s a recap of the series, plus an early edit of the first third of The End of Evangelion. You will not miss anything by skipping it (provided you saw the director’s cuts of episodes 21-24). Death(true) and Death(true)2 are re-edits of the recap part of Death and Rebirth. If you hear about The Revival of Evangelion, it’s simply an edited together version of Death(true)2 and The End of Evangelion.

You said something about a manga series at the beginning there?

Like Star Wars in 1977, Evangelion’s famous debut wasn’t actually its debut. Yoshiyuki Sadamoto released the first issue of a manga also entitled Neon Genesis Evangelion at the very end of 1994, 10 months before the show started! Sadamoto was the character designer for the TV show, and as a result, the art in the manga is extremely consistent. He nails it in every chapter.
Incredibly, it took Sadamoto almost 19 years to finish the series, which exists in a separate continuity to the show. Certain plot points play out very differently, and the characterization differs in many places, but the overall story arc is the one we know and love from the anime.
I highly recommend the manga to fans of the show, despite it telling a very similar story. You’ll appreciate it best if you’ve taken a bit of a break between the anime before starting the manga.
There are 13 volumes of the manga, and they’re fairly easy to come by. The easiest way to read them is by picking up the omnibus editions which have multiple volumes within each. There are five omnibuses collecting the entire series.

I swear there are way more movies than what you’ve mentioned so far.

Uh, yeah. We’ll get to those. First of all, let’s wrap up some of the other Evangelion-related media that’s out there:
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Angelic Days is a spinoff manga set in an alternate continuity. It has shades of the core Evangelion story but with a romantic shoujo twist. Six volumes were released between 2003 and 2005.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Shinji Ikari Riasing Project is another spinoff manga set in another alternate continuity. It’s very different to the core Evangelion story and has much more comedy and fanservice. 18 volumes were released between 2005 and 2016.
Evangelion: Campus Apocalypse (aka Neon Genesis Evangelion Academy: Record of Heaven's Descent in Japanese) is yet another spinoff manga in another alternate continuity, this time with a high school mystery premise. Three volumes were released in 2007.
Petit Eva: [email protected] is a chibi-style parody manga, plus a series of animated shorts, where everyone gets up to wacky hijinks completely unconnected to any of the other continuities. If you are desperately searching this out, you may have taken your Evangelion obsession a bit too far.
There are quite a few video games that are part of the series, but most were only released in Japan and aren’t considered canon. The exception is Neon Genesis Evangelion 2, originally released for the Playstation 2 in 2003 in Japan only. As a reward for completing each scenario, the player is given access to increasingly-detailed information on various Evangelion topics (Called the “Classified Information”). The complete Classified Information includes a lot of information not found anywhere else in the series, and what’s more, it seems to be aligned with the original anime’s continuity. Many of the “Evangelion Explained” videos you’ll see will heavily rely on this information. It’s debated whether it’s truly “canon” or not, but apparently Hideako Anno was involved in the writing. In my opinion, the Classified Information makes enough sense that I do consider it canon, and if you’re itching for answers after finishing the core story, you should look it up – English translations are easy to find.
There are a bunch of one-off publications of dubious canonicity that you may wish to look up, and heaps of art books and other behind-the-scenes material, much of it only in Japanese.
The merchandise situation is… Out of control. You will struggle to name a product that has not had an Evangelion-themed version of it produced at some point.

Okay, can we talk about these other movies now?

The Rebuild of Evangelion is a series of four full-length theatrical films set in a new Evangelion continuity.
If you want to be absolutely in the dark about what to expect from these movies, you should skip this section. Although I won’t give away any story spoilers, I will hint at a little about what these movies “feel” like.
The Rebuild films are infamous for a number of reasons:
  1. The first film was released in 2007, and the second was supposed to come out later that year, and the third and fourth were supposed to be released together in 2008. The second film didn’t come out until 2009, the third not until 2012, and the fourth… No release date as of 2020. Yeah.
  2. They’re not made by Gainax, but by a new studio called Khara. Hideako Anno is still director though. I think Khara do a great job, but not all fans are fans.
  3. Anno pitched the series as a kind of “re-make” of the original TV series in theatrical form, but with the benefit of more than a decade’s worth of the director’s personal growth and a very healthy animation budget. It was suggested that the characters and story would be re-tooled for a modern audience, and that the whole thing would be more accessible and coherent than the original continuity. That... was a lie.
  4. Are the films really a new continuity? Don’t say I didn’t warn you if you choose to obliviously bring this topic up around passionate fans.
Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone was released in 2007 and follows the first arc of the anime very closely, shot-for-shot for much of it. It’s great to see those scenes animated in glorious HD though.
Evangelion 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance was released in 2009 and introduces a brand new, Rebuild-exclusive character into the mix. To say it diverges from the original story would be an understatement.
Evangelion 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo was released in 2012 and should probably require a waiver to be signed before it is viewed.
Evangelion 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time was supposed to come out in 2020, but the coronavirus caused it to be put on hold indefinitely. The film is apparently complete, but knowing Anno, that doesn’t necessarily mean much. At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if the film goes through three more titles and a complete re-write before it finally comes out.
Most of the original English and Japanese voice casts returned for the Rebuild films with a few exceptions, and the performances are better than they’ve ever been. The English dub of 3.0 was a bit of a drama, with it initially premiering in 2013 in cinemas, but with no DVD release in sight. Khara apparently sent the dubbing team (Funimation) back to the drawing board. The agonizingly re-worked dub was finally released on DVD in 2016.
The DVD and Blu-ray releases of the films have slightly altered numbering: 1.11, 2.22, 3.33 etc. This reflects that many corrections and additions were included for these releases compared to the versions shown in cinemas.

I can’t really tell if you’re recommending these movies or not…

The Rebuild series is frustrating, perplexing, sometimes rage-inducing, but it’s the true successor to the original core story, with Hideako Anno’s creative vision in full bloom. You need to see these movies if you’re an Evangelion fan. However, you also need to completely re-set your expectations. Don’t stumble into these movies right after the credits roll on The End of Evangelion. You’re going to want to give it some time, get a few life experiences under your belt, and then sit down with a fresh palate to experience this very different iteration of the Evangelion story.

Why do people go on and on about Evangelion? The fans seem kind of rabid sometimes.

If you’ve read this far, you will probably have got the sense that any media franchise that inspires people to write guides like this (and many, many other far more impressive fan contributions) must have some sort of cult-like appeal. That’s pretty much the case for Evangelion, and the fans are pretty notorious for their passion and geekery. That can be said for quite a few franchises, but I think Evangelion is special because it genuinely changes people’s lives.
Hideako Anno has struggled with depression on-and-off throughout his life, and Evangelion is a product of that struggle. Evangelion tries to grapple with the “why am I really here” question in a way that very few other stories have. I still remember the moments after I first finished the series, my heart beating fast, and in the ensuing days I mulled over what it all meant. After a while, and some discussions with other fans, I started to put together my own interpretation. The immense satisfaction and comfort I felt after deciding on the meaning that I wanted to take away stays with me to this day, and the lessons I took from it are ones I still regularly use to navigate my own life.
Ask any Evangelion fan and they’ll have a story similar to this. That’s why they’re so fiercely protective of it. It’s much more than a media franchise – it’s an introduction to a lifelong practice of self-reflection and conscious growth, and that’s not a small thing.
Regardless of what you get out of Evangelion, at the very least I hope you have a blast enjoying it, and becoming part of the huge and wonderful community of Evangelion fans around the world.

2020.09.12 10:14 Mitch_NZ How to get into Neon Genesis Evangelion: A 100% spoiler-free guide for complete newbies

*…or is there?

Okay, so I start with the TV series?

Yep! The original show (which I’ll just call NGE from here on in) ran for a single season of 26 episodes between 1995 and 1996 in Japan, and each episode aired in a half-hour timeslot, so episode lengths are generally 21-23 minutes each. It won’t take you long to get through it (although I recommend NOT binging it all at once for reasons I’ll go into later) unlike many other long-running franchises.
There are some key things to know before you start, though:

Just a few more bits of advice from me:

Regardless of what you get out of Evangelion, at the very least I hope you have a blast enjoying it, and becoming part of the huge and wonderful community of Evangelion fans around
------
How did you find this guide? I'd love to hear your feedback. I can think of lots more things I'd love to include in future editions and absolutely intend on expanding it and updating it as new material is released.
The main intended audience for this guide is actually film/TV geeks who may not be anime fans, but have no doubt heard NGE referred to as one of the best - I really want to encourage them to step out of their comfort zone and reap the rewards, so this guide is really trying to cater for them!
For the love of all that is holy, please don't post spoilers in the comments! I really want this to be a valuable resource for those curious about getting into the series.
